Hello, I'm about to turn 19 years old and I believe that I am currently experiencing the first stages of a receding hairline. I would like to start taking finasteride to combat this as soon as possible but I don't know if this would be the wisest option. As of now, I'm not 100% sure that I am balding but my hairline has definitely receded a decent amount and my dad started balding around my age. It is not at the point where it is noticeable to others yet and I would like to stop it before it does become noticeable. I have heard about the side effects and I am certainly concerned about the sexual side effects as well as the potential for gynecomastia (I had surgery a few years back to have gynecomastia removed) but I am determined to keep my hair and these are risks I am willing to take. I have heard that you shouldn't take finasteride until after you have fully developed but I don't want to wait until it's too late. I am about to start my freshman year of college and a bald head is the last thing that I want to be worrying about right now. Would you advise me to take finasteride at this point or no? I truly appreciate any advice. Thanks so much.

I would suggest taking the .25-.5mg dose/day. This will decrease side effects while still getting the majority of the results. The side effects usually pass, if you have any at all.

Gynecomastia is extremely rare on Finasteride. I am not sure if there was an actual proven case of 1mg/day causing gyno.

DHT is not really involved in growing bone wise. At 19 your penis would have grown to its full length/width so this is not going to cause an issue with inhibiting it, plus 5AR1 is usually in the penile tissues and not the enzymes Finasteride inhibits.
