The pathomechanism for omeprazole-induced hypertrichosis is not known. Omeprazole significantly increases duodenal prostaglandin (PG)E2 synthesis and elevates the expression level of cyclooxygenase-2 protein and PGE2 level. Prostaglandin F2 alpha analogues such as latanoprost can increase pigmentation, thickness, length, and number of eyelashes. Prostaglandins are involved in hair growth regulation; PGE2 and PGF2 alpha stimulate hair growth, whereas PGD2 has an inhibitory effect. Is has been suggested that a balance between PGE2 and PGD2 controls hair growth in mouse and human skin, whereas drugs that stimulate hair growth may exert their effects by acting on prostaglandin pathways. It has been suggested that minoxidil increases production of PGE2, and topical cetirizine, which has been reported to be beneficial in androgenetic alopecia, decreases inflammatory cell infiltrate and PGD2 production. Prostaglandins may have an action on hair growth regulation through their vasomotor effects in the dermis, inducing blood flow in the perifollicular vessels, and by inducing DNA replication and stimulation of cell division and growth.

Most people that use the drug seem to complain of hair loss, though I am sure this is due to the stomach acid decreasing causing some nutritional issues or bacterial issues/immune issues and has nothing to do with PGs. Would be interesting to see if a topical works.

Interesting but wouldn't it just be doing the same thing as Minoxidil? Might try adding it to my already full topical routine.

Perhaps, though I don't think we can conclude anything based on two little kids growing massive amounts of body hair. This drug is widely used and available and this is not listed as a side effect. Like I said in my reply, this drug, orally, usually causes hair thinning if anything.

I think you are probably right. There is only 2 kids presenting with the condition so it could simply be a reaction of some sort of a combination of factors. I will await for Trichosan or Westonci to trial it first before I start crushing the pills.

good find op .
"Omeprazole significantly increases duodenal prostaglan-din (PG)E2 synthesis10 and elevates the expression level of cyclooxy-genase-2 protein and PGE2 level.11 Prostaglandin F2 alpha analogues such as latanoprost can increase pigmentation, thickness, length, and FIGURE 3 Excess dark hair on extremities and trunk FIGURE 4 Marked reduction of hypertrichosis 5 months after omeprazole withdrawal FIGURE 2 One year after omeprazole withdrawal 2"
really interesting and a safe drug on paper. potential minoxidil alternative maybe even "safer" ' (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1397750 )
Also interesting words on cetirizine.
"It has been suggested that minoxidil increases production of PGE2, 13 and topical cetirizine, which has been reported to be beneficial in androgenetic alopecia, decreases inflammatory cell infiltrate and PGD 2 produc-tion.14"
too bad prescription needed .

Right Ho! Not like I need to worry about burning off any hair on the back of my head. Throwing some Zyrtec in there with it, maybe some zinc,...

Millions of people use omeprazole - I'm pretty sure many of them have hair loss and would have noticed if it helped significantly in any way. The effect noted in children can be due to other factors (greater pluripotency of childrens' cells), or perhaps the mechanism works, but in adults other hair loss related conditions prevent the mechanism noted from having a cosmetic effect (e.g., DHT, fibrosis etc.).

I get real bad scalp itch and shedding when I use proton pump acid inhibitors. I suspect I would get bad hairloss on omeprazole as well. I think the kids don' have any male pattern baldness kicked in yet and low testosterone so the mechanism and result would be different. I almost went out and bought some omeprazole when I read this but researched it first and saw an abundance of hairloss posts about it....i am tempted to know if applying topically could help?...i also noticed in the article how they mentioned that ceterizine helps with male pattern baldness. This baffles me because I tried it topically several times and all it did was cause increased sebum production and more hairloss. It felt like one as having an allergic reaction from the topical ceterizine. How ironic...go figure.
