I’m currently in India and here all most all derms are offering their “own” costly medicines for hair treatments. Is it advisable to start finasteride without prescription (considering in India, it is easy to get one withoua t prescription)? Or shall I go to a derm and ask him to write me finepcia prescription directly?

I’m M20 having very thin hair with no recession yet. Hair density is decreased and my scalp is visible when I oil or come in too much light.

IF the derm prescribes the right tests before taking propecia (sperm count + DHT concentration), THEN it makes sense to see one before taking finasteride.
Otherwise, you might as well do without.

That's the problem.. i went to see 2 derms till now and both of them just look at my hair and then writes their own medicine and asks me to pay. Nothing else they do. I think they're just ripping people off. And both the derms were well reputed.

But this is exactly what dermatologists do in 90% of the cases. Rarely do they have to solve a problem that requires them more than 10 minutes’ examination.
Completely different situation, for instance, for eye doctors, or even dentists.

I would ask the doctor to point me to the studies and pictures showing that this medicine is effective

I think its debatable whether someone even needs a sperm count or hormone panel before starting finasteride. Its very rare that your going to have any problems, and if you did is the before panel going to help you? Raising one hormone back up might not fix the problem anyway
The only thing you need is the script for the finasteride.

If your sperm count is low, or hormone levels are not in the range, you may not want to take finasteride.
Informed decisions are the best decisions according to my experience.
