Is It Time To Switch From Finasteride To Dutasteride?

I started aggressively and suddenly receding at the temples 18 months ago. I have now been on finasteride, min and nizoral for 16 months and I estimate that I have gone from a Norwood 2.5 to Norwood 3.5 in that time. It’s also now diffuse across my entire Norwood region. Crown is still pretty covered (albeit thinner) but my hairline and forelock are in horrible shape. Thinking about switching to duta as a last ditch effort to slow down the rapid progression. Does that seem like a reasonable approach? I live in the US and am not sure where to obtain it. Is there anything else besides sides with which I need to be concerned? I have not had any sides on finasteride.

Yes I think you should definitely make the switch to dutasteride based upon what you have said. A lot of guys on this site have had success with dutasteride after unsuccessfully trying to halt their hair loss with finasteride. I've used dutasteride myself for many years and it has completely stopped my hair loss and grown me a significant amount of hair. The risk of sides is slightly greater with dutasteride than finasteride, because dutasteride inhibits DHT more potently. But the fact that finasteride didn't give you sides is a very strong indicator that dutasteride won't either.

Any idea where I can get it? Should I expect a shedding period?

Your GP should be able to write you a prescription for it. Or you could see if there are any pharmacies in the US that offer an online consultation like we have here in the UK. You may or may not experience a shedding period. But the shedding period is only temporary and is a sign the treatment is working. The DHT-damaged hairs that will get shed will be replaced by new, healthy hairs that are being protected by the dutasteride from DHT.

I would definitely make the switch, i lost a lot of hair the year i was on finasteride, hairs i will probably never get back, but dutasteride seems to have stabilized it, dutasteride and spironolactone completely halted it imo for the 5 months i was on this combination. Im going to jump back on spironolactone again soon, anyway dutasteride should be enough for you imo. Sides in terms of libido are almost identical to that of finasteride in studies but the risk of mental sides are higher.

My GP will definitely not write me a prescription. He is way too conservative and won’t even prescribe finasteride. My derm who prescribed the finasteride is unlikely to prescribe it either but I could try her. Is there a place to order online which is reputable and going to supply the real deal?

Give inhousepharmacy a shot. They carry generic dutasteride (Dutas, Duprost, Dutagen) that has a strong track record.

Thanks. This helps. I’ve ordered other medication from all day chemist in the past but it’s been a few years. All of these offshore shops sketch me out a bit. Have you ordered duta from inhousepharmacy?

I’m assuming you used topical sprirolactone. That kind of treatment scares the crap out of me due to the sides but it sounds like it can be effective from what I’ve read.

Yes. Many times. Finasteride too. Inhouse is legit.

You could use either Inhouse or AllDayChemist. Both are legit. AllDayChemist are the more affordable of the two.

Has anyone used Murray Avenue Apothecary for dutasteride? I’m 3 months in and my hairline is being destroyed. I’ve also thinned on the back and sides. Perhaps it’s the impact of dropping finasteride but I don’t see how it’s possible that I will ever recover the hair I’ve lost the last 3 months - the majority occurring in the last 3 weeks.
