Is minoxidil essential?

Hey all,

I'm 22 and I've been noticing thinning over the whole of the top of my head for a couple of years now, particularly on the crown. Although I don't think I'm actually losing hair yet it's gotten to the point where I have to something about it.

So I've bought some fincar. I see a lot of guys using minoxidil as well. Do you think I should too or should I just see how I get on with finasteride by itself first?

I was thinking about using minoxidil to help get my thickness back up and then just maintaining it with the finasteride, but will stopping minoxidil have any adverse affects?

Thanks for the help!

Andy

If you start using minoxidil, you have to keep using it to maintain the results. You can't just use it for 6 months and then use finasteride and think that will maintain all your hair. The hair you grow using minoxidil is dependent on minoxidil to stay alive.

Starting finasteride first is a good idea if your hair loss is not too aggressive. Then you can stay on it for 6-12 months, and if your results are satisfactory you don't have to start minoxidil.

That sounds perfect. I'll do that.

Thanks for you help!

No problem, and good luck. Crown thinning often responds well to finasteride in terms of regrowth, and if you have not improved in 6-12 months you can always add minoxidil. But the way you're describing your "loss" (you are sure that this is male pattern baldness aren't you?), I doubt that'll be necessary.

Your should get on Nizoral (or another 2% or 1% ketoconazole shapoo) though.

why? isn't nizoral only for a bad scalp? or does it also slow down hairloss?

Yea it's definitely male pattern baldness. My dad's completely bald, although he didn't start balding until he was 27. My brother is 25 and started about the same time as me. Tough! I'm not losing any hairs yet, just hair thinning.

I just took my first finasteride tablet. I'm taking fincar 1.25mg. Bit anxious but here's to hoping!

Thanks again for the help!
