My hairline is rubbish as well. I´ve recently started shaving my hair and overall reasonably happy with it more than I expected (the shaved look, I mean) as my hair was thinning too.
I´ve been looking at something for my hairline too, I used to use both dermatch and nanogen for my longer hair. I´ve been expermenting with using a touch of dermatch with a cotton bud and blending it in to my V shaped hairline and blending it in to where my hair has been shaved. I´ve tried it a couple of times and it was so small the bits that I needed, almost brushing it gently across where the hairline was.. I´ve never attempted a flat NW1 hairline but more a U shape instead of a the Island V hairline I´ve got right now, but I´ve never had the balls to venture out in public to see if it was obvious or not, but it looked not bad in the mirror, but you´ve got the worry of people touching it.
When I wore some concealer in my old hair, no one seemd to touch your head, but now if it's shaved there is always someone wanting to rub it or touch it.
I've never gone out in public with in as I've never felt that confident with it, and of course if someone touches your head then it'll no doubt probably come off and make you look a bit weird.
I've not tried it on a Grade 1 or 0 shave only a razored shave. My hair is really dark so even when I shave with it a razor you can still see the hair shadow or where my male pattern baldness is.
