We all know the finasteride response curve by now. If they are essentially the same, why do doctors bother prescribing 5mg finasteride for BPH? 2.5mg finasteride is virtually identical in terms of DHT suppressed, and 1mg is only ~2% behind. It's also well known that 5mg finasteride gives patients more side-effects compared to 1mg finasteride. If the DHT suppressed is almost the same, why is the side-effects prevalence different?
Furthermore, look at the conclusion drawn from this study:
Relative Efficacy of Minoxidil and the 5-α Reductase Inhibitors in Androgenetic Alopecia Treatment of Male Patients
Efficacy of Androgenetic Alopecia treatments (after 0.5mg/day dutasteride) "in decreasing order of efficacy: 5 mg/d of oral finasteride, 5 mg/d of oral minoxidil, 1 mg/d of oral finasteride, 5% topical minoxidil, 2% topical minoxidil, and 0.25 mg/d of oral minoxidil."
