The H-N scale does not feature "in-between" numbers; and, there is no level below 1 ( = no loss, juvenile hairline). Btw, pictures are useless, and, why are you concerned about the H-N level in your case? It's a gimmick anyway. All you probably want to know is that you are not "norwood 3000" (yet), meaning you are (still) fine. If you'd die right now you'd r.i.p. fully covered! Blessed be the great and merciful banana hanger that hangs us the fruit in the trees! (Freely translated by Google.)

If someone's a Norwood 1 - but with further recession - that might indicate that the person's heading towards a Norwood 2 - and so informally one might deem this person a Norwood 1.5?

I think most people who ask such questions want some sage judgement from others more experienced on how their hairlines appear in the eyes of others as it might be difficult to accurately assess your own hairline when emotions are in play and might dilute your own perception.

I'll conclude that at the moment I have nothing to fear but that I'll keep an eye on how things unfold from here on.

I'd say your hairline is fine. obviously you've receeded a tad bit on the temples but if it stays like that than why waste money on treatments? It isn't making you look any older than an 18 year old. I would say just check on it every 1-2 months to compare with these photos. when you notice receeding again - start treating it cause you with "the big three" you will definately regrow back to the hairline you have now plus a little more, IMO.

Update: Decided to dig a little deeper and purchased Biotin and B Vitamin Complex. This proved to be a success as my hair feels really strong again (e.g. losing very few strands in the shower at the moment). Guess I'm not balding then. (So if people can relate to my situation, I think these supplements might be worth a try (they are cheap as well).)

It's mixed (e.g. my maternal grandfather was a Norwood 5-6 by the age of 50, while his brother on the other hand was a Norwood 1-2 with normal thinning by the time he died at around the age of 90. My father's a Norwood 1-2 with really thick hair comparable to the hair of Sean Penn in the late 90s and he's now past 50).

I also want to add that my temple area is beginning to thicken after adding B vitamin to my diet. I was worried about my crown area too because the hair there seemed brittle and dry and I also feared there was a bald spot in formation in and around the cowlick - but it all looks much better now. (I've also cut back on the usage of shampoo and I'm also regularly fasting as I think it might be beneficial for hair growth.)
