Is this possible?

I've been only been on the chronic sh*t (finasteride) for 3 days and I swear it's already slowed down my hair loss dramatically. Before starting the treatment I reckon I was losing about 300 hairs a day, now I'd estimate it's down near 100.

I've noticed that when I run my hands through my hair hardly anything comes out and when I rub my hair over my desk I'll only lose about 5 as opposed to 15.

So far all I've taken is 2.5mg of finasteride because my prescription says half a pill twice a week. I know this is not the typical dosing but it's what my Doctor suggested and I'll let you know how it goes.

Also, no sides so far.

So whatcha think? I'm not one to get caught up in the hype but I reckon it's already had an impact. Anyone else experienced something similar? Or am I crazy?

I hope I haven't jinxed myself by saying all this.

Lil' Update:
I just rubbed my hair vigorously for about ten seconds and not a single hair fell out...that's unheard of for me.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the half-life of drugs, but I'm pretty sure that by taking 2.5 mg of finasteride twice per week you're only covering yourself for maybe four days or less per week. Not only that, but I'd be sort of afraid of reflex hyperandrogenicity due to those days you don't have propecia in your system.

Somebody else around here probably knows more about this phenomenon.

Yeah, that's a good point. I'm not too keen to be a lab rat for this dosage but it'd be great if it works so I can avoid chopping pills and daily hits. I remember seeing a study (posted by bubka, I think) that showed finasteride lowers DHT almost instantly but I can't remember for how long.

like i said, i still think that the dosage is not optimal for hairloss, finasteride has a short half-life, and although dht takes a while to rebuild, it is still going to fluctuate, rather then stay low with a constant daily dosage

from what i have read / heard, aggressive balders are usually decent responders

Same thing happened to me. Within days of taking finasteride, my hair just stopped completely falling out. Now growing new hair, that's going to take a while. Congrats though.

However, if I were to take finasteride all over again, I would start with 1mg daily -- even with the chance of sides -- and than eventually move down to .5mg. I definitely encourage people to first start at the highest recommended dose for hairloss.

Although, your doctor has recommended a dose more likely used by people with prostate disorders. This is just irresponsible as it is wreckless.
I was going to say something about this, but was afraid someone would accuse me of meddling. Sounds like your doctor doesn't even realize the half-life of finasteride. Just as others have stated, your DHT levels are going to be fluctuating wildely. If he were here right now, I'd print out the chart for the half-life of various doses of finateride, and then shove it down his throat. Then maybe I'd give him a good swift kick in the nuts, for good measure. :)

Just because you don't want to split the pill, you'd risk major side effects? First of all, splitting a 5mg pill into fifths is easy. And if you decide to take .5mg eventually, you could just as easily bite a chunk in half each morning. It doesn't matter if the dosage isn't completely accurate. If you're taking 1mg a day, as long as the pill is all consumed in 5 days, you're good to go.

I'd ditch a 5mg or even a 2.5mg dosage immediately... and start on the normal 1mg for male pattern baldness.

Damn...yeah I think you're right. I'm gonna think about switching to 1mg a day.

your doctor is incompetent when it comes with hair loss. either that or he knows something NO ONE else knows about in the hair loss community. go on 1mg a day.

i have tried finasteride 2 different times, each time with amazing results immediately (within a month!) i am a blond diffuse thinner with a shaved head and my hair is darker on the side, each time my hair thicken up so much within a few weeks that people that had no idea i was on treatments commented that it looked like i was growing hair on top, and to a thinner that is a GREAT thing to hear. unfortunetly i had such terrible sides i had to quit despite the great success, even though i was only taking .25/day. somtimes i wonder if the best responders also have the worst sides. now i dont know what to do

Maybe you could try a topical DHT inhibitor, or even make a homemade version using your remaining finasteride pills.
