I don't know that he was a legit boxing trainer. I think maybe he was just there as a supportive role and to help in the corner and such, also a really close friend with Ali. I remember he was played by Jamie Foxx in the movie and from what I recall he was having struggles with drugs and stuff but Ali loved him
