well i guess i only feel it right to let everyone know my story on here since i've been posting for the past few days and all. Basically i'm 21 yearold male, healthy and in shape and all as i play soccer for my college etc. anyway, i'll start my whole story off by just stating for the record that up until about 9 months ago i always had a thick healthy nice set of hair. my family history of mbp is that it is almost non-existent on my father's side while on my mother's side most males my uncle included go bald, however usually it starts aggresively setting in somewhat later in life, 30s etc. anyway, i guess i was blessed with my mother genes as my father is pushing with huge grey mop on his head, and my brother has pretty much the same except without the grey.

picture of me 19 going on 20 taken a little over a year ago before i ever had any real hairloss. that's the style i have worn my hair in for years.

Around 9 months ago i started noticing more and more hairs falling out in the shower i didn't think much of it at first but it sort of just never stopped and seemed to get worse. then two months later from august to february i went on accutane for acne which i've battled pretty much my whole life, and while i guess it didn't cause the male pattern baldness that i had started it definetly didn't help and i'm sure sped it up. so i was consistently losing hair from accutane and once i came off of it in feburary my hair just took a turn for the worse. i was losing more and more hair in the shower probably up to 20-60 i would say would just come out. my once thick straight hair was becoming this sort of weak wirery strands on the top of my head and i started to notice a bald spot forming there. also my hariline along my temples seemed to just nose dive inward, i mean i always had a widow's peak, they definetly receeded an inch and a half.

this is a picture of the back area of my head probably at it's worst. usually the bald spot isn't as bad depending on how the hair lies but as you can see it really really sucks having to deal with it. probably isnt' that noticeable yet to people but who knows

recntly i would say that the fact that i am going bald at 21 really hit me hard. i mean it just sort of hit me all at once a couple weeks ago that it was happening so much quicker than i thought it ever would. i can deal with going bald when i'm in my 30s even late 20s for god's sakes, but 21, it leaves me with the question of why me. I've never even buzzed my hair due to the fact that i have mis-shaped head with a bump on the back. with my hair i look completely normal but i'm sure with a buzz it would look terrible. plus my hair is something that i've always had and loved my whole life and i'm like women when it comes to losing it right now. my parents are both in denial when i tell them that i am losing it, and just seem to constantly reassure me that it's not when i know it is.

recently i decided to do something about it so for the past week or so i went on propecia 1mg for the first 2 days, but as i'm only around 5'6 155lbs i found that it was a shock to my system and went and bought a pill cutter and am now taking .25mg every day. i also just started using rogaine 5% and just started today using nizoral 1%. What i'm hoping for is that since i still have a thick decent set of hair that by using the propecia and preventing the aggressive hair loss that i was going through most of it will fill in on it's own with time when it has a chance to grow back it isn't constantly falling out etc. with that said i was dealing with some sexual sides, low libido etc, and major ball ache the first few days on it, but today it seems to have settled down. also i had a minor break out in acne along my back and some on my chest due probably to the propecia. i can deal with that being there as long as it doesn't get any worse than it is, and stays the hell off my face. My few conerns and questions out there to all of you guys would be two fold propecia and muscle loss as i am a college athlete and need to maintain a healthy muscular body etc, and i dont want gyno and all. those are probably my biggest fears. my sex drive has recently started to show some signs of life, hopefully it comes back full force. so that's my story any input and or advice would be greatly appreciated.

another quick question about the rogaine. i know a lot of guys on here have a philosophy of staying away from rogaine and sticking to propecia, is there any particular reason for this?

Hey..

I haven't really introduced myself to the forum yet - I've been pretty much lurking the last couple of days to read people's story.

I'm in the same boat as you actually. I'm 21, in college. Been thinning pretty bad since Freshman year, and hair seems to just fall out when I touch my head. My hairline is pretty much gone so I'm relying on the hair on top of the scalpe, even though it's thin.

I tried Rogaine, 5% liquid form awhile back, but it made my scalpe itch so bad that I had to stop. I'm planning on going back, but this time, try using the foam because I didn't like the oily residue the liquid leaves.

I also bought Proscar online and should be getting it soon. I'm going to start taking that, hoping it'll stop my hair loss, but I'm afraid of the side-effects.

From what I'm reading, it looks like people are actually using both Propecia and Rogaine. Isn't Finasteride suppose to block the DHT and stop lair loss, and the Minoxidil helps with the regrowth?

I suppose because it's a lot more convenient to take one pill in the morning rather than having to put a liquid in your hair 2x a day. If your hair loss isn't readily noticeable - and your's doesn't seem to be - then with propecia you have a really good shot of 1.) keeping what you have and 2.) getting all the regrowth you need without messing around w/ rogaine. I use rogaine and propecia, but my hairloss looked a lot worse than yours, so if I were in your shoes I'd follow the advice and give propecia a try alone for a few months. The worst that could happen is you just keep the hair you have right now.

Hey,

Yeah all us young guys ask the same question, "Why me, why so young?"

Because you still have a good mop on your head I would start with Propecia first for a few months. I use both Propecia (Finasteride) and Rogaine but my loss is more extensive than yours.

Make sure you tell your doctor that you are going on these medications so he/she can write it in your file just in case.

Other than that, best of luck and keep us updated.

sucks getting it so young :(. it happened to me around age 24 (im 26 now).

hey but your hair isnt that bad at all. I think propecia alone should sort you out.

I'm on propecia (no rogaine) and my hair is a lot worse than yours :)

hey all thanks. yea well i've decided that i'm just going to use rogaine on the back area of my hair, and not my hair line. my reasoning for this right now is that even though my temples have receeded, i can still wear my hair long (looks really good today by the way), and i dont want to start a mass shed on the frontal regine by starting with rogaine. hopefully the .25mg of propecia and the nizoral i'm using will be enough to maintain or at least very much slow down the hairloss.

fyi (great shampoo is redken for men with thinning hair thickening shampoo) while it doesn't really do much as to stopping hairloss it is very healthy for your hair and makes it feel and look incredibly thick, by far the best one i feel is out there.

Try not to use that shampoo too often to make sure it doesn't cloud your judgment on progress.

And good luck bro!

I, and a few others here started thinning at 16 and under so we know how it feels. I probably wont be as lucky as the others and will end up pretty bald at 25ish.

1. You are only at the beginning stages of hair loss and propecia alone will more than likely give you the results you need.

2. If you do get results using both propecia and rogaine you will never know for sure which one is working for you and will be stuck using both for life.

Looking at your pictures, I advise you to drop the rogaine and give propecia alone 8-12 months before adding anything else.

yea i may only use rogaine on the back of my head as i dont want to cause excessive shedding in the front right now. as far as the propecia goes i've been on .25mg for the past week and a half and it has been difficult to get deep sleep, and i feel very very tired throughout the day. i'm trying to just ride this out and hopefully it will go away.

i stopped the propecia for a couple days because being in college and having to wake up every morning for practices was killing me with it. i mean it felt like i couldn't get any sleep with it, and that i was extremely tired and dazed in the mornings and somewhat throughout the day and this is only on .25mg of it. i think my problem may be the fact that i only came of accutane a little over two months ago and my liver and body may need some time to heal etc. however, my shedding is still very apparent and i don't want to end treatment with it. i may just use .25mg every other day and see how that works out.

haha i must say that is pretty amusing although i kinda scary at the same time. anyway, i wish i would look that decent with it shaved but the back of my head and my head shape in general is somewhat odd. i have a bump back there and it just isn't a smooth shape. with hair i look normal and all, but if i ever go that bald i'll be the guy with the rug on his head.

Same problem here. Up until a year ago (19th birthday) I had a proud head of thick, black hair. And now not so much. The hairline is intact, but thin (given some dedication, one can count all the hairs). I am a diffuse thinner, and most of it for now is in the hairline and about an inch behind it. Luckily, I can still cover it with the good hair from the back, and since I have started propecia a little over a month ago, I have seen one dramatic improvement, and that is the noticeable decrease in the shedding of fine, miniaturized hair. I am looking forward to some regrowth in the future.

At first I thought it was the "mature hairline", but I was skeptical of this because when I brush my hair back, there is a tuft of thin, straw like hair at the front. From what I have read and researched Propecia seems to be the key, and Rogaine may be used for additional regrowth. Good luck with the male pattern baldness.

Rogaine spreads past the area of application. You will shed all over.
