I've realized that I actually have the same hair loss pattern as my father, not my maternal grandfather

I was out for a walk in the sun with my dad the other day and I noticed that he has diffuse thinning across his entire scalp like me, you can't really tell that he has hair loss in regular lighting because he frauds his temples with a middle part, the sun was super harsh that day. He's 60 years old now so he has above average hair for his age so I don't think that he cares about it that much.

It's crazy to think that I'm 34 years younger than him and I'm not far off reaching his current state of hair loss. He either got lucky with male pattern baldness presenting later in life or I got really unlucky with my male pattern baldness starting 30 years before it should have.

When did the hair loss start on your mom's side - uncles and grandfather etc? I think its 2/3 chance that side on average and 1/3 your dad's side though you can sometimes match one side exactly.

My maternal grandfather had a big bald spot at the crown and was around a nw3 in his wedding photos, he was in his early 30s back then I think. I have 2 maternal cousins in their 30s with diffuse hair loss but they aren't losing it on the back and sides like me.

What do you mean back and sides? That the thinning is already as far out on the sides and as low in the back as an NW7 pattern? Your maternal side sounds about like both of my parents family except my family didnt get serious crown balding spots until 40s usually. Your dad is doing pretty good at 60 if he doesnt show much hair loss in regular lighting.

My hair is diffuse thinning on the back and sides of my head, it's only mild in the donor area but you can see my scalp on the sides. My temporal points are thinning too, they have continued to thin on dutasteride and oral min but my crown has improved in density.

You can see the scalp on the sides even when its brushed or combed down? If so I wonder if you have a nutrient deficiency of something. Some people claim if you do it will usually show up in the non-balding areas also as being really thin etc.

In "theory" all anti androgen medication for hair loss should affect the hairline and crown area equally. I wonder if DHT targets
the hair that has been stretched out from head growth first because the areas already have less hair around the scalp.

My son started using Minoxidil five years after I used it. I was nineteen when I started it, and you could see my hair on my forehead grow back (literally an inch across my forehead). That was with two percent. I eventually lost some of the hair on my temple.

His hair density is getting better. That said, his maternal grandfather was a Norwood six in his early fifties. His maternal grandmother had thick hair, and good hair density all her life. Her sister lost her hair due to androgen alopecia. It was all over diffuse, and she wore a wig.

Genetics are very strange.

That said, some males produce more DHT than others. There bodies might just be more powerful and produce more androgens.

I think the difference is how your body reacts with DHT to the inflammation that develops near the follicles and the amount of inflammation which more obviously equals more DHT doing its magic there and is one reason balding builds on itself besides the scalp slowly being destroyed. Seen too many low DHT looking people lose their hair like it was literally on fire with DHT. I will admit high DHT hairy body guys seem to be much more likely to go bald though.

@losingbattle88 i've had a similar experience with dutasteride as you, my crown got better on it but my hairline is getting fucked.
Yea man. I gave up on finasteride recently once again due to sexual sides and I also see no point in it when dutasteride gave me the same side effects and nuked my hair in the process. Im gonna avoid anti androgens and playing with my hormone levels and just be on OM solo.

I've heard that retrograde alopecia / DUPA can cause hair loss on the back and sides. I first noticed it about 8 years ago.

Testosterone influences brain development before birth, even in addition to orientation.

It's not always easy to notice because a person who acts feminine, might have a lot of DHT in their body after puberty.

There are benefits to androgens as well. In some studies, which are not really conclusive, androgens raised musical potential before birth.
