Hi guys,

I am a 25 year old guy from the Netherlands. Had very thick, wavy hair at least till i was 23. Never noticed any hairloss whatsoever. Didn't even think about it once, since my only direct male point of reference (my father) is in his late fifties and still has a decent head of hair, only quite recently thinning a bit on the crown.
Something like two years ago my that time girlfriend bluntly told me i was starting to thin on top. I didn't panick or anything, couldn't see it myself and my hairline was totally intact yet. But the next summer i was in Southern America and i got quite badly burned on the scalp, something that had never happened to me before. Also i noticed an increase in shedding of hair while showering, a new phenomenon to me as well. I blamed it on the malaria pills i was taking.
My denial phase ended the next fall, when i took a little mirror which showed that the back of my parting was getting rapidly broader. I freaked out and to tell the truth, i still haven't come to terms with the idea of balding yet.

Wasn't until July 2004 when i started to do something to fight it. Started with propecia and nizoral 1%.
Results so far have been very mixed, to put it mildly.
My scalp sometimes gets very irritated (or inflammated), also a novelty for me. There are days that nizoral soothes it, but on the other hand, my dandruff has even grown worse.
Propecia has taken me into a rollercoaster ride. After almost nine months i've had several sheddings, some of them due to the change of seasons i suppose. Overall my hairloss hasn't decreased though: still losing a solid 50+ almost every time i shampoo.
The diffused thinning on top seems to have worsened a little, and Androgenetic Alopecia slowly stretches it claws to the frontal part of the vertex (which is quite good, still). On the other hand, the most vulnerable spots on top appear to thicken up a tiny bit, although i am not sure of this - no good pics available.
One thing is for sure: within nine months i have moved from a Norwood 1 to an early Norwood 2. Yes, the temples have responded very violently to finasteride. Or maybe they were just doomed to retreat, in spite of any treatment.
Sides on finasteride: heavy feeling on the chest during the first week, which quickly went away. After seven weeks a sudden drop in libido. This lasted for two weeks, and (coincidentally?) vanished at the very moment i started with a handfull of pumpkin seeds every day. I would even describe my current libido as a bit higher than normal.

If finasteride succeeds in halting my hair loss right at this stage for several years, i'll be happy. I intend to hold on to it at least for one and a half year before deciding what to do afterwards.

that's a good plan.
I've read that some people took a year and a half to see results from propecia.

So hang in there. It's gonna get worse before it gets better.

Shedding in general is like the proverbial rollercoaster for me, but i've been noticing lately that the majority of the hairs falling out at the moment are those tiny, thin, colourless bastards.
I am absolutely sure that the hairs that i used to shed were a lot thicker.

I realise that this remains a lot of guessing, but does anybody recognize this? Does this indicate that i am shedding the DHT-affected hairs (good news), or does it only say that my overall hair quality has become a lot worse in only several months time?

(over nine months on propecia: hairline has gone worse, crown/ vertex more or less stable)

I was in the denile stage too, started noticing my hair wasnt being managable anymore, so I wore a hat. Then it hit me and I freaked out too, wondering how i never noticed before, and got mad about not starting treatment earlier. I would say Im already a norwood 1.5 or 2, I hope I either learn to accept it, treatment works, or being bald suddenly becomes the new craze.

Okay, almost one and a half years in there (Nizoral 1%, one year propecia 1mg, half a year proscar 1/4)..
I've continued to lose my hair, although i've had my ups and downs. Sometimes my hair would feel better for a couple of weeks, but then the itch would return in all its vehemence and tons of tiny colourless hairs would fall.
My temples (especially the left) have receeded into a M-shape (i suppose it's close to a Norwood 2), my sides have thinned considerably. I continue to see tiny hairs popping up near my hairline which sometimes do grow long. What discourages me though, is that i am thinning behind my hairline as well.
My initial problem was diffuse vertex thinning, especially around the crown. Haven't noticed any regrowth or thickening, but this area seems to be maintaining the best. Nevertheless, i do not part my hair anymore but comb it back to hide the vertex and crown thinning, which really sucks.

I am thinking about adding spironolactone to my regimen. Any thoughts? Cheers.
