Hi, guys.

A month or two ago, a friend noticed by hair was getting thin on the crown. I thought it was due to not using product that day and it was the way it was parted. When I got home, I looked in the mirror... and yeah, it looked thinner than I remember. Hard to tell since we can't see back there.

My temples have receeded since I was mid 20's. No big deal. Think it's stopped. And my hair has always been thin. And somedays, it's more noticeable than others... and when wet, very noticeable.

I asked my new doctor about options even though I already researched. He was a dink... LOL. He basically said "the right thing for me to say is to like yourself". As for finasteride, he told me to think about it.

I picked up a kit of minoxidil and started using that. I have another appointment tomorrow and plan on asking for finasteride.

Couple questions...

One... can I use minoxidil once a day at night and get benefit from it? Even less than 1mg of finasteride is fine according to what I read. Same goes for mixoxidil maybe?

Two... I already have gyno (due to few extra pounds plus genetic I think). Will finasteride make it worse or does it just ignite the cause it? Hope I'm clear on that... lol

However... before I buy the prescription, I wanted everyone's opinion here about it. I'm posting pics. I know it's not "bad" and some may think I'm crazy and to wait, but honest opinions please.

These are the best I can get for now (battery died in camera as well). I'll try and take some more later especially when wet.

I really don't think you need minoxidil at this point. I see only a tiny bit of balding at the top. I would try finasteride for 6 months and if you continue to bald then try the minoxidil, but I really don't see much at all. But if you want to add the minoxidil then by all means feel free. It certainly won't hurt- it just may be overkill at this point.

Ok yeah definitely get on finasteride asap. Buy it in 1 mg form as propecia/finpecia etc or just get proscar or a proscar generic and cut in fourth. Depends how your money situation is. Cutting the pills can be a tiny pain but it is a good deal cheaper.

Finasteride looks like it would be your best weapon by far.

Well there's virtually no difference in effectiveness bet

Well cutting proscar up into more than fifths is a real b**ch, and you might just end up crushing the pills. I have a tough time cutting them into fourths- your experience may vary. The reason being that the proscar pill is not very large to begin with. I HAVE heard of people cutting it into eighths though so it definitely can be done.

I'm stealing this info from collegechemistrystudent:

"0.2 mg/day (OF FINASTERIDE) regrow 82% as much hair as 1mg/day (OF FINASTERIDE), which regrows 83% as much hair as 5mg/day (OF FINASTERIDE)."

You could though just have a pattern of skipping days or something like that because the finasteride does have a prolonged effect on your DHT. What would be the reason to have a decreased dosage though? Proscar and ripoffs of it like Fincar would only run you about $90 dollars per year for 1.25 mg of it per day.

Are you worried about sides?

I would start out with around 1 milligram or 1.25 and then decrease it if you have sides.

If it's a money issue then you can cut it into more pieces without reducing the effectiveness that much.

As for minoxidil, it could regrow hair that you have lost but it doesn't inhibit DHT like finasteride does. After you've grown all the hair that you can with it, you have to keep taking minoxidil to maintain that hair.

Well actually you can bypass your doctor and get it online. It will save you a ton of money as well.

I really wouldn't worry about it, but if you find it happening and discontinue then it should subside.

Not from what I understand. I b elieve you have to stay on the minoxidil to maintain the minoxidil induced hair.

Got finasteride today. Only got 10 5mg of proscar to start incase I get bad side effects.

Had someone tell me today that I was crazy to do that since they don't see the baldness starting. Sometimes I think yes... sometimes no... *sigh* LOL

Anyone else got some input?

finasteride would fill that in.

If u are uncomfortable taking finasteride, topical spironolactone and minoxidil would be good. you're hair is in great shape, basically anything could fill that in. the important thing is using some kind of anti-androgen to prevent further hair loss.

Not uncomfortable. Just cautious. I'm not a big one for taking chemical drugs... lol. Try to be natural... and here's a drug that changes hormones in your body.

But... got the prescription. See how it goes.

I do know that high body fat does increase estrogen levels, and that once men drop below a certain level of body fat, it is extremely easy to keep it off. I think you should get on finasteride now, but loose the fat. cutting pills is easy with a pill cutter. That guy who said it is hard must be using a pocket knife.

Well, since my hair isn't that bad, I'm sticking to one a day use of the minoxidil. Plus, a drugstore no-name kit here is on sale for like $40... for a month. That's pricey. Plus, it's a pain in the ***... LOL.

I'm all familiar with weight loss. Dropped 18lbs so far anyways. I'm muscular, both naturally and gym work... but this layer of fat over it all. My dad is the same... and all his family... lol. Even when he was body building and lowered his fat, he had gyno. When I weighed like 165... still had it. Think it's part genetic. I just worried that finasteride could make it worse... that's all.

And yeah, i've used pill splitters before. No biggie. May even try to go into 5 pieces. See how it works.
