Kind Of At A Loss For Words Because There Is No Way This Isn’t Recession.

I’ve posted before and people told me to come back when I notice real change. Well it’s happened. This is the first real noticeable change in my hairline. The pictures kind of speak for themselves and my temples are completely different. Moms dad was full on NW7 by 30. F. Probably a bad sign to see this at 19 huh.

I'm so terrified of trying finasteride or dutasteride because they're banned by the NCAA. I'm not sure which is more of my identity, my hair or my athleticism. I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place right now.

List of banned drugs, says in italics Finasteride is NOT banned.

If you have aggressive baldness in your family and are noticing a continual degradation of your temples then I would start some form of treatment. We can't predict if your minor thinning will stay as is for a long time or rapidly deteriorate unfortunately...it is something you must decide.

Your hair looks fine. But I do not know your hair. Yes there is slightly less volume in the temples. Does this mean you are going bald? I and nobody can tell you. You are obviously very worried and have seen bad changes in your hair and your whole reason for not wanting to take Finasteride was the NCAA bans it, which it does not. So take Finasteride, because according to you, you need it.

Same thing happened to me bro. August 2017 I made a post asking about recession( I was ur age at this time). People laughed and said I was fine even though I noticed my hairline changing. One year later its June 2018 and Im a NW2 with diffuse thinning about to go on finasteride this week and was already on rogaine since january but am not responding. The people on this forum always say the best thing to do is to catch it early, but when someone actually tries to catch it early they get shut down lol.

Also my dad was NW7 at 21. Family history defininately plays a huge role and since you have NW7s in ur family like me I think you shouldnt take this lightly.

This is because a lot of people on this forum are much further along the Norwood scale and would do everything short of murder to have your hair. Of course they will tell you not to worry. You made a mistake listening to them and it should be a lesson that when it comes to concern for your own body and image you will have to take matters into your own hands. It’s also near impossible to accurately diagnose anyone via some pictures and brief background info on the internet. That said there are plenty here who would’ve taken you seriously but unfortunately you didn’t happen to interact with them. Regardless this forum was and still is a wealth of all the information you could need whether anyone believed you were balding or not.

More importantly if your loss is recent and you get on finasteride you can get it back. Even if it doesn’t come back and fina stops it right there that is what lots of people here would consider near perfect hair. If you get stabilized on fina and absolutely need that regrowth you can add minoxidil only at the hairline. Incredibly easy. Do some more research! You’ve caught it early enough for everything to be okay.

Funny how that works. I go from a literal feminine hairline to thinning temples and people say stuff like "What are you trolling you have hair still". They literally are just as bad as my mom telling me that because I still have hair I'm not balding? Or my dad trying to tell me that I have body dysmorphia and that it's just part of getting older (guy who had a NW0 until 40). I'm trying some random natural stuff for now because I'm scared of finasteride and probably will wait until I hit NW1, then start it just to make sure its not just maturation which is normal around 19.

Yes I would wait until you are 21 or 22 atleast. Only you can be the best judge of what is happening. If you really believe you are losing hair then you probably are. My advice is this. Dont get on finasteride if there is no thinning on the top of your head. Right now you are receding which could be just a normal aging hairline. This is normal and happens to most males over time. The problem occurs when thinning over your scalp happens and that is when you should take finasteride. For some this never happens and they just recede slowly over time while having thick hair for most of their life even though they are technically receding. Thinning hair is sign of true balding, a slightly receding hairline is just a sign of normal aging.

The first part is the best advice anyone can offer.

The second part is not entirely true. People keep female hairlines well into their 60s. While that may be more abnormal than a receding one, balding is balding whether you’re only receding or you are diffuse retrograde. Anything past a mature hairline is a sign you’re going to have baldness (semantically I would consider nw4 and even sometimes nw3 visible baldness.)

So in line with your first bit of advice I would say if you think your hairline is going beyond mature, it probably is. Whether you have top thinning or not.

this is how it started for me and I THINK I mentioned that in your first post. Exactly like this, actually, lol, it's insane. I'm on minoxidil atm having mixed feelings about finasteride

I'm going to schedule a visit with a derm. Either they will tell me I'm a going to be a baldbro if I don't get on finasteride or they will tell me to come back if I see any changes that are atypical. At the end of a day even though you're all massively helpful, pictures of a potential receding hairline pre-NW1 territory are almost impossible to accurately diagnose from a forum. Also time will tell the full story here. I see a lot of guys that have a U shaped hairline where there is a clear part on either side not from a haircut and they definitely are not balding. By U I mean just kind of that rounded shape all along the front, where it doesn't recede that deep.

There is a good chance that your derm will tell you that you arent balding even though you are. When I went to the derm for the first time about this she literally did not once even look at my hair. If anything go to a male derm.

My last post was more conversational than it was geared toward giving you advice.

I’ve been misdiagnosed by 3 derms, lots of time and money. But the worst part about it is actually just that by the time I was diagnosed I lost a sh*t ton of hair. It was noticeably different from when I had first sought out diagnosis.

You’re correct about the guys with a ‘u shape’ or mature hairline. But they don’t normally see it by 19 unless it’s going to get worse than that. Of course it is your risk and your decision.

Time will tell the full story and that could mean more hairloss.
