I know that in the US you can buy finasteride online with out a prescription is this legal? If not I probably won't go that route so what can I do? I don't have health insurance or anything and im a broke college student.... I doubt I would be able to walk in to a ready med to get a script for finasteride....any suggestions?

Legal or Not, who cares?...just order it online. The worst that can happen is it gets confiscated...you're not importing narcotics.

I see your point..I'm not really worried about getting in trouble though Its just a matter of personal beliefs, not that I judge anyone else that does it, just don't want to do it if its not legal.

Kudos to you on using morality as a reason for doing ANYTHING! :salut:

The Customs website info might help you make your decision. Let me know what you think:

If you're using morals, you also have to question take into consideration the reasons why these medications are so expensive and why the government does not want you purchasing from these foreign competitors.

Yes, it is clearly illegal.

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/clear ... _drugs.xml

"The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) prohibits persons from importing into the United States any prescription drug that has not been approved for sale by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or which is adulterated or misbranded within the meaning of the Act. Moreover, in those instances where a United States manufacturer makes an FDA-approved prescription drug and sends it abroad, the Act also prohibits any person other than the original manufacturer from importing the drug back into the United States. Thus, in virtually all instances, individual citizens are prohibited from importing prescription drugs into the United States."

Awesome thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it! As ive been researching it looks like they tend to avoid the actual question...they say that it is legal to have them imported but they don't really touch the actually topic of...is it legal to do with out a prescription. I think that the answer is closer to yes...through some sort of loop hole...I'm not really sure though. Most likely I'm going to try to get a prescription but i need insurance first so it might be a while. If I were to to the online thing i would want a black in white answer is it legal....and then id have to do some research on...is it safe...who knows what could be in that stuff......thanks for the help so far guys

Any particular reason why Cassin? Legality issue or lack of faith in the quality of the imported products?

Both.

I worry about how they have been handled, exposure, true exp date...on and on.

Much easier to go to your Doctor and get a prescription. Generic proscar from a pharmacy is cheap and peace of mind is worth sucking it up and seeing a doctor.

I couldn't stand the thought of wondering if I am taking something that is what it is supposed to be.

But how do you get a prescription from proscar, which is to treat BPH, for male pattern baldness?

You could always try to call doctors office you have been to before, speak to the nurse and ask for a prescription over the phone. I did it once and got it on my first try.

What can be more clearer than the CBP website itself?

From: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/ale ... cation.xml

Q: I thought that I could import a three-month supply of drugs. Is this not correct?
A: The FDA ( FDA ) has developed guidance allowing FDA Inspectors to exercise enforcement discretion. In deciding whether to exercise discretion to allow personal shipments of drugs or devices, FDA personnel may consider a more permissive policy in the following situations:

* When the intended use is appropriately identified, such use is not for treatment of a serious condition, and the product is not known to represent significant health risk; or
* When
1. the intended use is unapproved and for a serious condition for which effective treatment may not be available domestically either through commercial or clinical means;
2. there is no known commercialization or promotion to persons residing in the U.S. by those involved in the distribution of the product at issue;
3. the product is considered not to represent an unreasonable risk; and
4. the individual seeking to import the product affirms in writing that it is for the patient’s own use (generally not more than 3 month supply) and provides the name and address of the doctor licensed in the U.S. responsible for his or her treatment with the product, or provides evidence that the product is for the continuation of a treatment begun in a foreign country.

Insurance will not cover propecia either. Proscar is for the treatment of BPH, so I'm pretty sure that they will not cover this for use of male pattern baldness. I would not want to put my doctor in the position of committing insurance fraud if that's the case.

It may not cover propcia, its not absolute. If you have a top notch PPO they may very well do it.

Don't submit it with an insurance claim. I don't. I pay out of pocket. Its only about $82. It seems to change by a dollar or two every time I go.

That's about what I pay as well. On a per day basis it's still dirt cheap...less than a Coke...and like Coke, it's the "real thing."

Is that for a 30 day supply the Proscar is $82??

So my dosing regimen would be 30 * 2 (EOD) * 8 (cut into 1/8ths) = 480 day supply for $82. Hmmm, not bad for the real deal! Maybe I will look into this when my Finax runs out.

Where hairwegoagain and I live yes. Stuff is dirt cheap. I can't understand why people don't simply go to a doctor if they have that option.

As for cutting, thats going to be extremely hard to do if you use actual proscar, the generic finasteride made by Teva is round. So try to go generic at the pharmacy.

Cassin,

Do you use the prescription generic proscar or the proscar brand stuff?

It might be worth checking to see if the generic pill is available through Wal-Mart's new $4 generic program. I doubt it, but you never know.
