Took this crap for years and forgot about the side effects, had low libido and depression, absence of erctions unless forced...
Last year stopped and started had a panic attack one night, off work for a month, coincidentally around the time I finished a run of finasteride...
Didn't make the connection, recovered from all sides only to go back on again not knowing what had caused them. This time more lax about dividing dose as lost cutter, prob 1.75mg per day, depression, penile/testes shrunk, finally realised what was going on and found propeciahelp, took one last dose (maybe at least 2.5 mg b4 bed) then dead dick next morning, lost pills...
2 weeks nothing, took an ecstasy regrettably on my birthday and bumped my leg, noticed that when looking at p**rn felt absolutely nothing mentally ir physically, then 3 weeks after quit start getting uncontrollable morning erections, spontaneous erections at work, but...
Eyes popping out, burning in chest, feel depressed and out of it, under stress anyway at work and home, bruise like a grandad's on my leg, then finally 3 and a bit weeks go out on Friday after work for date, drink 4 or so pints...
Go back to mine alone(first date), wake up next morning with hardon, try to wank off, IT BENDS TO THE LEFT...then seems to bend in half at the middle and then is DEAD...
CANT SLEEP FOR TWO DAYS, START LOSING FACIAL MUSCLE, PUFFY EYES LIKE ROCKY BALBOA, NO ENERGY, OFF WORK , NO APPETITE...

9 months on, lost 16lbs muscle, depression, insomnia, abysmal concentartion, lost job friends sex ambitions looks...hypogonadism? If I'm lucky... could be Spinal Bulbar atrophy...

BEWARE this stuff it is an appalling treatment for something so ultimately trivial as hair loss. Do you want to lose your brain and your dick?

I must take blame for forgetting about sides and not paying attention to sites like these, would have figured out what was going on. I am not screaming at Merck although they and the FDA are culpable for ruining so many lives...

While your story seem to be an extreme case, some of it does seem familliar...
I started propecia years ago. Was pretty depressed already when I started, so knowing that my hair would stop falling off gave me a boost.
However, my anxiety got worse over the following year.

Now, before I go on, I should tell you that I managed to cope with these issues by therapy alone. But two-three month ago, I decided to lower my dosage of propecia, to 0.5 every day. Then, just as an experiment, maybe a month later took 0.5 every mon, twn and fri. And now I´m concidering flushing the whole thing down the toilet.

Here´s why: my libido has soared, my mood is great, and in every way my body feels lighter. I am a very tactile person, and through my depression, it sometimes felt as if I was moving in syrup... Now I feel... lighter. Less heavy.

Ok, I know that it takes a couple of weeks for DHT- levels peak after discontinuation, and another weeks for them to stabilize, so it may just be a DHT- boost I´m feeling (kinda like an athelete on steroides), but still....

DHT is a neurosteroide. It breaks the blood brain barrier and acts as a GABA modulator, according to recent research. (www.pubmed.gov ... search for finasteride and depression. You´ll find disturbing data)

It's a shame there are no balding doctors that are willing to experiment on this site! Would be handy!

If you try to tell a doctor your problems started with finasteride, he will get rid of you fast, because you're imagining things, proving that with the fact sheet that comes with Propecia where all the possible side effects are listed. Of course, we all know that the sheet is wrong and there's a lot more to 5AR2 inhibiting than that what's said on there.

Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean it's "crap".

finasteride has worked wonders for many on this board, including me, with no sides.

Sorry, but it was your own fault to experience sides and continue on the drug.

Do your research.

Ok, I know most of the finasteride side- effects reports are due to mass hysteria. Mood and libido go up and down in natural cycles and, of course, knowing about side effects could make you imagine them (nocebo- the opposite of placebo).

BUT: finasteride does link to erectile dysfunction, reduced sperm quality and depression. True, it's rare, but it happens, and many researchers are concerned because of this.

DHT is not a "bad" hormone that needs to go away, and it's two main functions is not to cause hair loss and prostate cancer.
DHT stimulates sperm cell profileration in the epididymis, regular, healthy cell growth in prostata AND is neruo active. It also stimulates bone growth and facial hair growth.

alpha5- reductase has other uses than to reduce and hydrolyze testosterone, it also reduces and hydrolyses progesterone and estradiol, hormones wich are also neuro active.
