Liquid Minoxidil For Hairline? Good Or Bad Idea

Hey guys I'm a college student turning 21 in a couple months. I've noticed some rapid receding in my hairline in the past year. My hair is receding in the classic "M" shape with the end of my hairline above my temples having moved up maybe an inch. I started to workout and feel a little more confident in myself but now this is one of the main things I've been worrying about. This is something i've been expecting as all the men on my father's side of the family are pretty much bald, but I'm a shorter guy and I'm really self conscious about losing my hair.

I've been taking a 1,000mcg biotin pill twice a day with a multi vitamin. I'm not really sure of the benefit but I've read that it can make your hair stronger so I guess I'll stick with it. It hasn't been much of an issue to take (the only side effect being I have to clip my nails more often). I was wondering if starting rogaine would be a good option for me. I have pretty thick curly hair everywhere except my hairline. My hairline is more of a U shape now with baby hairs where my hairline used to be and small thinning hairs pointing down at where my hairline is currently. I thought I could maybe start the liquid minoxidil treatment (specifically the kirkland 5%) and apply it only to the corners of the front of my head to see if i could get ahead of this early slow down some of the recession. I've been reading up a lot lately about rogaine specifically reviews and how the product works. However, there are a couple things I am concerned about:
1) Does it make sense to only use the liquid minoxidil on just my hairline? I'm scared of using the foam although I've read that is it easier to apply and less greasy because I do not want all my hair to become dependent on the product I mainly want to just focus on my hairline.

2) How intense can the shedding phase be? I'm really nervous that I could just wreck my hairline and become more anxious throughout this process. Has anyone tried it who can give me some insight?

3) Just generally nervous to start because I've read some really bad things about people who deeply regret starting it I understand it can be a long journey but I'd be down to start it if I can salvage a couple years before I lose all my hair.

TL;DR: younger guy with receding hairline. Wondering if i'd be a good candidate to start minoxidil. Concerned on the dependency of the product for the rest of my life and the intensity initial shedding phase. Has anyone had experience with this who could offer me some advice I've read both good and very bad things.

1) If you apply it on the crown all the scalp and body will be affected by the minoxidil. Applying on a particular region will just saturate that area more. With liquid I guarantee it won't stay on the hairline, it will drip.

2) I've never shed, hair density just increased quickly.

3) You can start and drop it, you can restart it a year later and you will get results again.

For the hairline the best is really hair transplants, not many got results with even finasteride and minoxidil on the hairline.

would you recommend to just use the foam all over my scalp instead of applying the liquid to effected areas?

I've never used the foam, try to use the cream or gel version if you want to target an area. You could also use a tennis headband to avoid the liquid minoxidil from dripping over your face, I knew someone that did that and got good results too.

Thanks for the help man. I might try the whole headband thing. So you personally have had no problems with minoxidil? Like I said I'm just a little nervous about starting. I've read some negative reviews and things saying minoxidil can accelerate the aging process especially if it gets on your pillow and comes in contact with your face. Do you have any tips about starting out such as application (do i want to get it all over my hairline or just the skin around it) and if i should use it 1 or 2 times a day (2 times a day to start out seems a little aggressive, I was thinking maybe just before i go to sleep at night).

You can just tilt your head back and use the tip of the dropper to rub in the minoxidil into your scalp to avoid getting any on your face.

I always apply minoxidil 4 hours or more before bed, remove with the cold shower head, let it dry then go to sleep. Other than bloatiness during those 4 hours after applying minoxidil there aren't much issues but I don't eat sugar and make sure that I exercise in order to sweat, drink water, etc... Body hair got much stronger, my hands are hairy now. Think like this, are the results good enough to endure the trouble of having to dump greasy liquid minoxidil on your scalp everyday? I only apply 1 time a day, it's enough if you make sure it makes proper contact with your skin and 80% doesn't end up in your hair.

Have you guys tried minoxidil on the front of your scalps? I've read reviews about minoxidil "recking" people's hairlines. I'm not sure if these are people that jut gave up during the shedding phase/ before they got results. i'm leaning toward trying the liquid on the front of my scalp with the headband although I might wait until the summer so I don't go through some intense shedding during the school year.

I use it on my hairline, doesn't wreck anything but the results aren't stellar. Holds the line and regrew a few vellus hairs for me. Finasteride is what you're looking for for real hairline defense.
