I heard about this going around but can someone explain in more detail.
I'll let another posters wrods describe the question.

i hear this "little to no body hair" reference made alot with conjunction to using propecia and how if you have little to no body hair the risks are heightened, can you clarify this or state the science.

Thanks.

well, this is purely a guess, so dont take what i say to be truth

there's two types of people who bald, those who are sensitive to dht and those who have an excess of it, those who have an excess of it are "hairy" and reducing the amount of dht will not have a huge effect being that they produce more than enough already

those who are sensitive to it dont have the "extra" to spare. propecia blocks the dht and being that they dont have an excess to lose it could have more of a negative hormonal effect on them

Ironically, I'm pretty hairy and eliminating DHT seems to have made a big difference.

Zak explained it well.

The two users here who have expereiced 'permanent' sexual side effects even after discontinuing propecia have little to no body hair.

It hasnt been scientificly documented, but it makes sense.

When I started finasteride about five years ago I had little to no body hair. I've been off it for several months now and had a DHT saliva test that showed my level to be about 10.6 where most men begin in the 20 range and go upward. Yet over the past two years or so I've seen a dramatic increase in body hair - anywhere there was a bit of longer, thicker but blonde hair such as my legs has turned into longer, thicker, dark hair. Anywhere there was peach fuzz has elongated, thickened and gotten a tad darker. And my hairline has continued to recede.

I know I've seen several studies in the past that indicate that using finasteride can upregulate your androgen receptors. Whether that means there are more of them made/turned on, or that the ones you have become more sensitive, I don't know. But I believe this is what happened with me.

Oh, and someone asked elsewhere - yes, I did slowly build up estrogenic effects, increased body fat overall and in the gut, lowered libido, and though it took about 4 years to show up I realized at that point that indeed my libido was lower and that I wasn't "performing" nearly like I used to. I'm not sure what month of being off finasteride I'm at now, but I believe it's the fifth, and I can definitely say that I'm slowly 'reverting'. My body fat is slowly creeping downward, and while I'm not bouncing off the walls with a hard-on like an 18-year-old, when the time comes it's rock hard like I don't remember it being for years and years and years, the way I thought I might have to take v**** to get back to.

Pelican,

Thanks for your input. Why did you decide to get off the finasteride? Was it because of the estrogenic effects? Second, how did you respond to the drug? Did you regrow/maintain your hair for the full five years? Last, how old are you?

Thank you.

No body hair and Propecia

This has got me really worried now. I am entering my 4th week with Propecia and, although, no noticeable side effects as of yet.....i do have very little body hair (no chest or back hair, not much on the arms and legs and can never grow a beard or full sideburns). Im 27 years old so im out of my puberty years......

Can anyone shed any more light on this topic..it is very interesting indeed and deserves more discussion/research.

Is there anyone out there who HAS had success with Propecia with NO side effects and also has little body hair?

I know plenty of people that have thinningdan.

I, for one, have little or no body hair, can't grow anything on my face, and did not experience side effects initially with Propecia. The body works in many different ways, and attempts to pinhole its mechanisms are usually fruitless. Don't let this discourage you.

YOu state that you didnt experience side effects INITIALLY...does that mean you did after extended use?

Anybody else have little body hair who didnt get any side effects and have success with propecia?

I don't believe there is much relation with body hair and side effects of finasteride. Finasteride treatment at 1 mg/day lowers DHT to about the same level for everyone, or so as I remember from some clinical data. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

I have been on finasteride for 3+ years now, and have noticed more sexual side effects (lower libido, softer erections, etc.) now. Also, my total estrogen count is way above a normal 21-year old. However, I am an anomaly.

Most users (i.e. 97%) don't have any side effects, or the side effects are so non-dramatic, that they don't care to report them. Remember that millions of men in the U.S. alone are on Propecia. What you see on this forum is a very small, somewhat biased portion of that segment.

Like with many statistical surveys, the people that are adversely affected tend to be most vocal, while those that have no problems would much rather live their lives rather than talk about their success on a online BBS.

That's total BS. Quick comparison. Take Xzellerate for example. Great results from his hairloss regimen. Yet he probably has more posts than anyone else on this site. Brucelee is another example. He's reported great success, yet he is a frequent poster as well. Or how about Axon. Axon has reported great success. None of these people has posted complaining about any major side effects.

On the other hand, there are people like Polar Bear, Sedrox, and Joebloe. Polar Bear was a pretty frequent poster until he had side effects from finasteride. After he got major sexual side effects from finasteride, he stopped posting because he no longer cared about his hairloss and no one here could give him any useful advice on how to get rid of his sexual dysfunction. Sedrox and Joebloe both came here looking for answers on how to overcome finasteride-induced sexual side effects, but both of them disappeared shortly after joining because no one could offer them any useful advice.

Now I'm not saying that side effects are the norm. But I'm getting tired of hearing that people with side effects are the most vocal. Most of the time, it seems like these people go away pretty quickly because no one really gives a damn that they have side effects.

I disagree.

There are millions of users of Propecia. If you took a study of the percent of those millions that report problems with the drug and the percent in these message boards that report problems, I believe there will be a statistical difference.
