Since 2002, i have moved to Vegas, had a hysterectmony in 2004 (I am on natural hormones) and almost suffered a nevrvous breakdown from a relationship that cause me to lose 30 pounds in 3 months. It also seems like i have lost the oils in my scalp and body. My hair is very dry and i can go without washing it for days and there still is no natural oils that use to come out when i was younger.
With all this happening i can understand the lost but everything is ok now and i would like to know what i can do tp get back the oils in my body and what kind of home remedies does anyone know of to keep the moisture and oils in your hair.

Hi Lucy,

I would personally suggest limiting your shower time and using the least hot water you find comfortable. A lukewarm shower is far more gentle on skin and hair than hot water and should help. Wash your hair as little as possible, some suggest only using conditioner and cutting out the shampoo altogether which has worked well for me, takes a little getting used to but stick with it. Moisturiser over your whole body directly after every shower, try to find a moisturiser that contains urea as this will help your skin retain far more moisture.

You might like to try some diet changes as well, cut down on alcohol coffee and definately cigarettes if you smoke. Try to eat fresh fruit and vegetables, and stay away from foods such as pasta and white bread. Fish, especially oily fish like salmon will be a great addition to your diet. Olive oil on a nice leafy salad with a good piece of fish is the perfect meal in my opinion.

I strongly recommend taking Evening primrose oil supplements as they will definately help with oil levels your skin and some say are beneficial to women with fluctuating hormone levels.

As to home remedies quite a few on this forum think extra virgin olive oil applied to the scalp has helped them, one person here uses a somewhat complicated essential oil mixture with various oils such as almond oil. Either way try to cut down the use of detergents on your skin and scalp and up the oils in your diet and that should help. Most importantly, try to keep your life as stress free as possible :)

If you can afford it get your thyroid levels checked and also test your underarm temperature when waking (see link below). Contrary to what many people think, hypothyroidism can cause weight loss too, not just hyper-thyroidism. You should also have have a complete physical and get your hormones checked (all of them - DHEA through the androgens and estrogens).

Also, I don't think you should have started minoxidil for this problem, especially without understanding why and how minoxidil works.

As far as hair oils go, if you live in a town or city with Indian shops and markets look there. Indian women put oil in their hair to help it keep it's luster and some of the oils/potions smell really nice as well. If you don't have such places, maybe google "Ayurvedic hair oil" or "Ayurveda hair oil".
