lunarjm's story

My frontal hairline started receding when I was about 28. I am now 32, about to turn 33 and the hair loss continues after a 3+ year regimen. My current regimen has not helped at all and I'm at the crossroads as to how to proceed.

Here is my current regimen, all obtained from minoxidil.com:

Age 29-31

5% Xandrox - 2x daily
Combo of Dr. Lee's Regrowth Shampoo and Nizoral 2% every couple of weeks

Age 31

Added Xandrox 15% - once daily
5% Xandrox - once daily
Combo of Dr. Lee's Regrowth Shampoo and Nizoral 2% every couple of weeks

Age 32+

Dropped Xandrox 15% after about a year
5% Xandrox - once daily
Combo of Dr. Lee's Regrowth Shampoo and Nizoral 2% every couple of weeks

At this this point I'm wondering if I should just come to grips with the fact that I'm going to lose my hair (which is freaking me out), or I'm wondering if I should try Propecia which I've been hesitant to do in the past? I guess initially I viewed Propecia as risky, but at this point I'm willing to give it a try if it will help in frontal hair loss.

Could anyone give some feedback on Propecia...positives and negatives, and their current regimen, because I noticed some people take less than the 1 mg dosage. Any additional tips/info would be great as well. Also if anyone is on a similar regimen, I'd love to hear your story.

BTW: Why is Proscar about 5x less than Propecia??

Sorry no pics at this time.

Thanks everyone!

Because it is the only proven drug for hair loss in a pill.

They basically had to go through the FDA trials for the same drug..

1 for BPH..Proscar

1 for male pattern baldness..Propecia

Actually Proscar is about $30 more than Propecia. Not sure where your getting the 5x thing unless your insurance covered it.

I was checking prices online at this Canadian Pharmacy that I've used before and Propecia is $136 for 84 1 mg tablets and Proscar is $164 for 90 5 mg tablets. That's about a 5 to 1 difference in price.

Do you use either one?

Ohhhh I see..

Sorry. I thought you meant pill for pill.

I use Proscar cut up.

So as for why...

Because it's for your hair and they know people will pay for it.

Ok, so I take it you cut the Proscar into 5 pieces and take 1 mg for your daily regimen? I've read that some doctors are advising taking about .25 mg of finasteride, which would involve dividing Proscar into 25 pieces? I'm not if it's as effective, it's just something I've seen come up more than once.

Could you give me any feedback on finasteride...good/bad effects and your regimen?

Thanks.

Well, my own Finasteride story is not so positive. I am 5 months into treatment, but haven´t seen any results yet. Maybe it slowed down my loss a little bit, but I don´t think so. I am still hoping for it to be working soon. Nevertheless I recommend everyone to give Propecia or Proscar at least a chance. It is so easy to use and cheap if you go for the generic versions. If you do get sides you can still stop it, even though most people tolerate it well. Good Luck to you!

I'm thinking about giving it a try...I think at best it may slow down the hairloss process, but I'm not really expecting to regrow hair. Thanks for the feedback...good luck to you as well!
