Smaller paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30930146 (does anyone have access and can upload the pdf?)

Basically, they found that there is a dermis-resident TREM2+ macrophage subpopulation that promotes hair follicle stem cell quiescence (quiescence = dormant/resting), which in turn, inhibits hair growth via cytokine-mediated JAK-STAT signaling.

Based from abstract of the thesis (thesis not available yet), the macrophages and Oncostatin M (OSM) were found to be up-regulated in the bald scalp of Androgenetic Alopecia patients.

The JAK-STAT inhibitors block this, meaning it could be that topical JAK-STAT inhibitors may work for Androgenetic Alopecia, here is hoping.

Aclaris therapeutics is due to release data from their Androgenetic Alopecia trail this quarter. If JAK-STAT doesnt work, I am just going to concede and get a hair transplant...ha :p
