Male 22 Thinning Hair At Crown (sudden) - Seeking Advice!

Hi, I have noticed the hair on my crown has thinned drastically in the past few months seemingly out of nowhere to the point where I've grown concerned about it. I find it odd as all my life people have commented how thick my hair is (and the surrounding hair remains to be thick) - there is also no baldness in my family that I am aware of. From certain angles it definitely looks a lot worse than others, but now I notice it regularly and my Mum commented on it too when I bought it up and said she had noticed. My hair is also not receeding at all from the front, it is only the crown that is affected. I am overdue a haircut so don't know if it's something I should ask the barbers about when I go? Really I'm just looking for advice and comments as I'm not sure if it is baldness, something else, or what to even do from here. Really appreciate any help in advance.

Typical male pattern baldness, this is how mine started and I was in denial too.

Get on finasteride and minoxidil, maybe add micro-needling once per week, and you can make a full recovery.

Dont think its stress related, telogen effluvium, whatever, it is male pattern baldness. But your case is very treatable if you start early.

You say your hair line hasn’t changed but it almost certainly has with that level of crown loss and there will be a general loss of density too.

Thank you both for your honesty and the recommendations. I've had a look into the products and have got finasteride on the way.

What I meant by that was that the hairline at the front hasn't changed, only the crown.

You are lucky then, that means with treatment you can probably hold your hairline for a long time (which is more important and harder to treat than the crown).

Hi Jacob.

Firstly, I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor. I would advise you to begin with Minoxidil and go from there. I would not be in a rush to jump on finasteride due to possible sides. minoxidil can be very effective with the crown area.

Terrible advice. Finasteride should always come first because it treats the underlying cause of hair loss.

Jacob, I won't ruin your thread by getting into an argument with another user, but in this case it may be helpful for you. Finasteride can be helpful for sure. Minoxidil can also be very helpful without many of the unwanted side effects that Finasteride may bring. There are several "underlying" causes of hair loss, of which Finasteride targets one. If this drug was a cure for baldness, surely it would market itself as such. I took finasteride for 2 years and I am still dealing with sides a decade later. So yes, some thought should be given to popping any pill that will alter your body in a significant way. It may work wonderfully for you without any side effects whatsoever, but you should still know the potential risks going in.

We weren’t talking about side effects so your post is only marginally relevant. But thanks anyway.

Treat the underline cause first. You could always start out with topical finasteride or Morr F if your scalp doesn’t mind it to get all the benefits and no sides. My loss started similar to yours. The crown thinned first and the hairline started receding a year or so after just to let ya know.

Hi, just posting an update since my initial post. It's been three months on Finasteride (admittedly, I've not been as diligent as I could have been with taking it - missing a few days here and there and taking it at different times) and I have been comparing photos regularly to check the process. My hair seems to have improved a little bit but then at some angles it looks more widespread. My hairline at the front still has no signs of receding so it is still restricted to thinning on the top of my head. I am definitely unlucky as my family has virtually no male pattern baldness in it - my Grandad in his 80s has a full set of hair and so does my Dad! A bit off topic, but I did a 23andme DNA test and it showed I had the LEAST statistical probability of having a 'bald' spot possible, as well as a very unlikely probability of hair loss - talk about unlucky!

Anyway, I'll attach some pictures and would appreciate any comments from what others think as well as to be honest this bothers me a lot (which I guess it does anyone going through it) and the amount of hours I have spent obsessing over how my hair looks has been way too many. I tried to take the pictures from the same angles and lighting as the original ones - coincidentally I'm also wearing the same t-shirt in them (I promise it has been washed since lol).
