Hello everyone,

I need some help. I'm 23 years old and suffering from hair loss at my temples and frontal part of my head. Take a look at the pictures attached to see exactly whats going on.

Theres some obvious thinning there, more on my right than my left. I feel like its slowly progressing, and just like many of you have experienced or are experiencing, it's emotionally debilitating. So far the only two therapies I've been trying out are biotin and ketoconazole shampoo. I'm trying to be as conservative with my approach as I can but I recognize the window to stop the progression of hair loss, and possibly have new hair growth is getting narrower each day.

I have two questions:

I've been taking ketoconazole for a couple weeks now. I'm noticing im shedding with each application in the shower and it's noticable when I look in the mirror that my hairline thinned out a bit since I used it. I know with minoxidil people say that's a good sign the medication is working, but when I researched people with similar side affects taking ketoconazole, some say they never got that hair back. I want to know from your own experiences whether I should stick with it or give it up? I take it every 3 days and am contemplating just taking it once a week.

The other question I have is with regard to finasteride. The side affects scare me a bit but after spending a lot of time on these forums I think I'm going to try it, but my issue is how to obtain it. Theres no way I'm paying hundreds of dollars for that pill, so the only option for me is proscar and splitting it myself. I don't have any prostate issues, so I doubt a physician would write a script for me. Is there any other reliable way I can get it? If so, please list them because I've been searching online and a lot of these websites seem sketchy to me.

Thank you for your responses in advance, I really appreciate it

Although I cringe at referring people to mega corporate monsters like Walmart. I have heard that their pharmacy carries generic finasteride. for crazy cheap. As for your nizoral question; I would do more research before stopping it altogether. Three times a week is enough, once a week I am not sure about. Be sure you lather and let it sit in for at least 5-10 minutes before following with an equally thorough rinse. All the best.

Thanks for your insight I.D Walker. I hate to deal with big corp. myself so I understand what you mean. By the way, I decided to give up the Nizoral. I'm just too paranoid I'll keep shedding. I couldn't take it anymore.

Damn, I didn't know nizoral could trigger such a big shed. As far as finasteride goes follow ID Walker's advice. I ordered a two year supply online late last year, but when I am done with that I plan on getting my stuff from a local pharmacy. Prices are at least reasonable now so there is no reason not to go with a reputable local pharmacy.

Yeah I scheduled an appointment to see my Doctor. I'll bring up finasteride to him and see what he thinks. But I'll definitely look for deals at local pharmacies as long as they're within a reasonable range.

Walmart is relatively the same price for generic finasteride as walgreens cvs etc.

Costco is 20% the cost of everyone else. It was like 35 bucks for a 90 day supply of 1mg finasteride.

Yeah, I got my generic Proscar from Costco. It was like $17 for 90 pills. 90 pills multiplied by 4 pieces each is 360 doses of 1.25mg. So basically it was $17 for a year's supply. Much like everyone else in this thread, I don't like big corporations much, but I'm not going to spend a lot more money elsewhere just to stand on principal. It's literally less than a nickel per day. Can't beat that.

Thats great and everything but how did you get your Doctor to prescribe you proscar. I visited my doctor last week and he insisted that only a dermatologist can prescribe me finasteride or proscar. I can't see a dermatologist at the moment because the only one that accepts my insurance is like 2 hours away. Is there any other way I could get it. Somewhere that's actually credible because I've heard of fake pills before.

Your hairline looks similar to mine & I'm 23 also. I was going to start finasteride once I graduate and get a job but decided on a change of plan a few weeks ago and bought some propecia and am now on day 10 of it. Most people don't experience sides with finasteride, and if they do they disappear in a month or so. I have none so far.
