*Started finasteride on 9/1/2010, nizoral on 6/1/2010*

I'll start with a photo:

That's me at age 19. Believe it or not, I wasn't balding then. I'd had the widows peak since birth, and it seems to have slightly receded now. My hair is just naturally very thin and the top has always been half as thick as the sides and a different color.

In 2007, I had very long hair. At the time, I was a musician, living the musician lifestyle - long spans of time with improper nutrition, high levels of stress, poor hygiene (including only washing hair once or twice a week).

During this time, I started to notice frequent shedding (I couldn't run my hands through my hair without bringing several hairs out). I'd never really had long hair before, so I thought it was probably normal. It kept up for a few months, my hair looked the same, I got bored with the long hair and cut it. No more shedding.

A few months after the short haircut:

Grew my hair long again in late 2008. In summer of 09, a girl friend remarked that I was balding in the back. I said she was crazy and dismissed her comment.

Fall of 09, a male friend remarked that I was balding after a rehearsal. I figured it was probably because my hair is just thin, and was wet from sweating - you could always see my scalp through wet hair. Hell, you could usually see it a bit through dry hair...at least on top.

But, I got a bit paranoid and began checking my hair frequently. The b**ch of it all was, I'm one of those guys with the "en vogue" combover. That's how I do my hair when it's long, that's how my stylist cuts it, that's how I like it. I asked my stylist if I was balding - she said no, I've always had a "bald spot" and it's just the way my hair is. Asked my girlfriend, she said - no, it's just your cowlick. I've known both of them since before my initial shed.

I'd never looked at the back of my head in a mirror.

5.jpg

I didn't believe either of them, and shaved my head. (Moral - girls lie!)

I do not shed and don't have the spry-looking hairs at the front, even though I've had some recession.

What you cannot see in the pictures is that, in proper overhead lighting at the correct angle, I can easily see a thinning pattern on the right side of the top of my head, going forward.

TLDR Summary:

-Always had thin hair on top
-Girlfriend and stylist say I'm not balding, no change at all
-No one in family history with male pattern baldness
-Some temple recession
-Gleaming dome in the right light
-One period of shedding 3 years ago, none since
-I'm convinced it's slow moving male pattern baldness

Re: Mike_b's Story - (25 /crown thinning and slight recession)

I went to my Dr today and asked for the script he recommended (Propecia).

Then I asked for Proscar (cheaper).

He said "No, that will alter your prostate."

I said, "Aren't they the same drug in differing doses"?

He had to LOOK IT UP and said - yes, I guess I shouldn't prescribe either. Then he said that finasteride was available in a topical format. I said, sure - hook me up with that, while thinking that there is no such thing. He couldn't find that.

He prescribed a hair transplant.

f*** my doctor. I'm going to seek out a derm starting tomorrow. I just wish I could get my $62.50 back.

You're right.

The more I got to thinking about it, the more I realized how in jeopardy my health could be if my doctor doesn't know something as simple as that Proscar and Propecia are the same drug in differing doses.

Like, what if I have a real medical problem? I don't want him prescribing my ANYTHING.

I told my family members the story (I'm open about my hair loss to all of them) and they are appalled and looking for a new doctor.

Lol reminds me of my doctor.

I walked in, I told her my problem and she looked at my hair and she says, yes you are balding but sadly balding is genetic and there isn't anything available to treat it. I told her about propecia, she looked it up in a book and says sorry I can't prescribe you this, it's for androgenic alopecia and not male pattern baldness. *facepalm*

my energy levels overall are much higher than they ever were without finasteride. weird stuff, not at all in my head either. these sides are fine by me.

also random tingling on the top of my head towards the middle and towards the back. comes and goes.

shedding!!! hope it's a good sign. do not like it, though. i barely had coverage when my hair was full so it could go downhill pretty fast and i'll have to shave it down.

growing it out now bc i hate the short hair look on me. really dont want to be stuck with that look for the rest of my life.

Aside from your widow's peak, I did not notice any hair loss at all on you, especially on the crown.

Can you show us a few pictures of your crown and temple areas now that you're on finasteride?

I have my own pictures of my hair loss at the crown [in my sig] which I think is more substantial than yours. I am going on finasteride soon and it would be quite helpful to see pics of early shedding.

Good luck!

Re: Mike_b's Story - (25 / finasteride/nizoral / Update on finasteride Sides. PICS)

Trust me, your hair looks much better than mine. The following pics reveal my thinning much better than the pics with very long or buzzed hair, bc both of those styles are great for camouflaging.

The length my hair is now is perfect for revealing baldness. I was stupid to cut it, honestly. I probably would have gotten away with long hair for a considerable amount of time to come.

PLEASE NOTE: The hairloss revealed in these pictures is not from finasteride. It's the same hair loss I've seen all along. My finasteride shed means that after drying my hair I can shake out 10-15 hairs when before it would be like 2. I don't wake up with hairs on my pillow or anything like that.....Thank God. I feel sooo bad for guys in that situation.

But, I digress.

Sorry about having product in some. I haven't been taking many pictures, so they're a little scattered.

From the bad side, without styling product after Nizoral shampooing. You can't see the loss from the other side at all.

Re: Mike_b's Story - (25, 1 Month on finasteride/nizoral) NEW PICS & UPDATE

Lots of very short hairs along the hairline and even at the widow's peak. More than I can count, but I'd say 50-60 at least....all around 1/4-1/2 inch or so. Not baby hairs, either. Normal blonde hairs. Hopefully this is happening at the crown, too. I'm happy for the hairline coming forward a bit but my crown is most concerning as it can't be covered like the hairline can.

Will take more progress photos and upload in a few days.
