Minoxidil and puffy eyes?

Hello!

I have been wondering whether minoxidil may cause puffy eyes. It's been only a few days since I've started using Minoxidil and finasteride. However I have noticed that I have growing bags under my eyes. Today, all my colleagues noticed that my eyes look tired and swollen!!
Since I've read that there is a chance that minoxidil may retain fluids, is it possible that it's because of it, that I have baggy eyes? I am starting to worry!

Do not apply minoxidil on a damp scalp. It increases absorption, hence chances for sides(and water retention). Make sure you do not scratch your scalp during application.

Stick to the recommended dosage of 1ml per application religiously.

If the problem persists even with one application per day and lower concentrations of minoxidil, discontinue medication.

I got the puffy eyes for a week or two after starting Minoxidil, but it gradually went away.

For a temporary solution, L'Oreal For Men makes an anti-puffiness gel that works great.

I use more than the recommended 1ml of minoxidil per application, I probably use 1.5ml or 2ml. I apply it to a damp scalp because I want increased absorbption, and, I have not encountered any eye or face puffiness. However, this is just my personal experience.

My suggestion was made, having in mind that there already is a case of possible water retention. I did not imply that everyone straying from the recommended dose will end looking like this:

Although I use the recommended 1ml, I also apply it on a damp scalp for the same reason, always keeping a (non-bloated) eye for sides.

I have the same issue. My fiend who has not seen me for a year told me that my yes are so puffed up. I use only once and less than recommended 1 mg.

Taurine is a natural mild duretic, also inhibits tgf-b1(good for hair). Its also good for fibrosis
Take 2g of taurine daily
Take collagen protein 20g daily

Several studies have conclusively demonstrated that taurine blunts the effects of TGF-B on the hair follicle as well as facilitating an indefinite hair cell survival.

Aptly termed the “hair follicle assassin” in a recent update by New Health and Longevity, transforming growth factor beta 1, (tgf-b one) and its apparently pivotal role in hair loss, has been stimulating a lot of interest in the scientific community of late.

Tgf-b 1 is part of a cytokine super-family in mammals that contains some 30 members. These dimeric proteins regulate the proliferation and apoptosis (destruction) in many cell types and have a central role in the inflammation that is associated with hair follicle miniaturization, fibrosis (rigidification), and its eventual loss.

Numerous researchers have directly implicated tgf-b1, and its localized effects on the hair follicles as the singularly most significant factor in androgenetic alopecia.

A study published in 2013 describes androgenetic alopecia as a “modern malady” that is exacerbated by stress in all its forms.

The effects of taurine were assessed with hair loss that was linked to chemical stress agents. A significantly positive response to taurine supplementation was found not only with a stoppage of hair loss, but better stress adaptation as well. It was concluded that taurine by itself can help with hair loss, or when used concurrently with other treatments.

Research published in 2008 evaluated taurine’s effects on TGF-b. The researchers used taurine on in-vitro hair follicles. It was demonstrated that taurine shields the hair follicle from the catabolic effects of (TGF)-β1, in addition to promoting hair survival.

(TGF)-β1 plays a pivotal role in the fibrosis of hair follicle and its progressive miniaturization, seen in Androgenetic Alopecia. In fact it has been conclusively shown that TGF-b directly contributes to the hair growth suppression seen in male pattern baldness.

The Anti-Inflammation Effects of Taurine;

Inflammation plays a major role in male pattern hair loss, caused by DHT.

The pronounced anti-inflammation effects of Taurine supplementation reduce or eliminate micro-inflammation, whether DHT induced (as in the case of male pattern baldness), or due to scarring alopecia.

Numerous studies have shown Taurine to have anti-oxidant effects, and inhibit an array of pro-inflammatory mediators, implying a potential cure for psoriasis, eczema, alopecia areata, vitiligo, and other auto-immune disorders. In Androgenetic Alopecia, TGF-B is stimulated by DHT in the dermal papilla. TGF-B inhibitors reverse this process by preventing miniaturization and promote the elongation of the hair follicle.

TGF-B plays a key role in formation of fibrosis, which is essentially a collagen rigidification in response to long standing inflammation, which is an established mechanism in male pattern baldness. Taurine supplementation has been shown to prevent the formation of, and ameliorate existing fibrosis in many organ systems, including pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, renal fibrosis, liver fibrosis, Tylenol toxicity, alcohol liver related damage, and the “perifollicular” fibrosis seen in male pattern baldness.

Fibrosis Leads to Destruction of Hair Follicles in Advanced cases of male pattern baldness

One particular study assessing the effects of taurine supplementation on “hair fragility” on 20 women between 20 to 68 years of age who had increased shedding and visible thinning demonstrated that a very modest daily supplementary intake of taurine 150mg, Catechin 75mg and Zinc 15mg reversed the thinning process. 95% of the female subjects showed a visible improvement in hair densification and a measurable increase in hair diameter.

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that plays many roles in promoting health. ... It strengthens the heart muscle and plays a major role in regulating the heart's contractility.1 Taurine also acts as a naturaldiuretic by keeping potassium and magnesium inside cells and keeping excess sodium out.

I didn't want to post this in here but 5g of taurine and probably closer to 50g Gelatin protein has stopped all my shedding in the past three weeks. Also eating based on ray peat diet principles.

Agreed-Efficacy is increased with wet scalp. Also, since hair is already saturated with water, less minoxidil gets absorbed by the hair. It's really a continuous fight between efficacy for hair vs side effects.

Keep us informed how you get on. I wish more of us could try this to see if its effective or not. Studies show us that the science is there for it to work.

If the use of Minoxidil reduces collagen production, so we need to change our diet to counteract this effect. I have increased anti-oxidant foods and started taking collagen supplements for a year or so. Also i started lightly dermarolling/stamping the bags under the eyes (without getting too close to the eye). I think it did improve overall appearance.
