Is it minoxidil or finasteride/propecia thats causes the dark circles around my eyes?

And is there anyway to improve it other then to stop taking the meds ?

had a feeling it was...

My face feels more bloated, and the dark circles are quite bad makes me look even older then I am !

Am considering stopping minoxidil but will have to adjust a few things, the only thing minoxidil has done is made my hair thicker over 3 years, perhaps theres another type of foam/conditioner thats alot cheaper and does the same thing to my hair line.

To be far, minoxidil does not affect everyone like that. It's a drug, and as with any drug if you have bad side effects you should discontinue using it.

Yes its becoz of minoxidil, the scientific reason behind is that minoxidil basically a vasodilator previously used to treat high pressure via oral doses has all the side effects associated with with the oral dose as well as other blood thinners . Facial bloating and swelling is due to water retention caused by minoxidil and generally happens when minoxidil is applied too much on scalp/ minoxidil is getting absorbed too much or you are overally sensitive to minoxidil or its preparation

Solution. following steps helps in 99% of cases (follow all these)

1) Discontinue minoxidil for a week
2) On resuming minoxidil, instead of 1% daily twice a day cut back to exact or a little less 1 % once a day ( growth rate wont suffer)
2.5) Spread and Rub minoxidil on scalp and just donot let it sit as droplets on scalp. (very imp)
3) Apply on dry and non hydrated scalp i.e. not directly after the shower or on wet scalp.
4) Switch over to cream/gel based or non proplyene glycol based formulations (not necessary unless propylene glycol itself is the cause..which as such doesnt cause bloating by itself)
5)Ask your doctor or a pharmacist for a low dose diuretic and have it once a day or as per your doctor advise or for a natural route go for sauna/spa/steam twice a day - good for your skin too ;) - important also supplement some of these if possible

*Green tea is a natural diuretic food that has been in use for centuries in China.
* Cranberry juice can aid in removal of excess fluid retention.
*Apple cider vinegar exhibits natural diuretic properties and in addition maintains the potassium levels. It can be added to the salad dressing.
*Dandelion is often used as a natural diuretic.
*Nettle has natural diuretic properties that facilitate good cleansing.
*Dandelion leaf tea aids in detoxification and has a beneficial effect on those suffering from cystitis and urinary tract infections.
*Fennel has carminative and diuretic properties and is frequently used in seasoning food.
This should bring down side effects substantially with every one and in majority of the population . face will be 100 % back to normal.

Incase if you still feel bloating reduction is marginal (happens only in 0.01 % cases ) switch over to 2 % and follow the above steps too

Other reported side effects of oral / topical minoxidil

Common side effects of minoxidil include burning or irritation of the eye; itching; redness or irritation at the treated area; unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body. Users should seek medical attention right away if they experience the severe side effects: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; dizziness; fainting; fast heartbeat; sudden, unexplained weight gain; swollen hands or feet.[7]
Alcohol present in topical preparations may dry the scalp, resulting in dandruff.[8] Side effects of oral minoxidil may include swelling of the face and extremities, rapid and irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, cardiac lesions, and focal necrosis of the papillary muscle and subendocardial areas of the left ventricle.[9] There have been cases of allergic reactions to minoxidil or the non-active ingredient propylene glycol, which is found in some forms of topical Rogaine.
Pseudoacromegaly is an extremely rarely reported side effect of large doses of oral minoxidil.

p.s. - I used to work as a drug tester with Schering - Plough, products containing propylene glycol were part of my testing :)

Its not that bad but bad enough, now that ive stopped wearing the glasses people at work have said for the past 2 months how come you look like you havent slept....

I belive people have not noticed it since they look at my spectacles rather then my eyes so it was harder too see the circles, but once they come off you can see them.

While its not so bad I just get the feeling since minoxidil hasnt done anything for me over almost 3 years so im thinking of dropping it or reducing it too 2-3 x a week....

Yes, dark swollen circles under the eyes, I've been having this problem for some time now as well. I've been constantly wondering what on earth could be causing it because I get plenty of sleep, and I can't totally single out the minoxidil in my Spectral DNC-L as the cause just yet, but this thread does raise my suspicions considerably.

Does anyone know of a better growth stimulant out there besides Spectral DNC-L? Quite frankly I'm sick of it, it's expensive, makes my hair stiff and nasty, sometimes leaves a gross orange stain on my scalp--and most recently--I think I got a bad batch, as the cream is like milky-white, looks, smells, and feels like they just threw in some Dove Moisturizing Cream thinking they could pull one over on someone and save some money.

Any suggestions for a growth stimulant out there that has less side effects, same efficacy?

I wonder if the foam would give same sides as I hear it dries much quicker?

i have had the same problems after using spectral dnc-l for about 2 years , finasteride for 9 months ...

looking back at old photos made me realise how much my face had changed , very bloated with dark eye circles and my skin has lost its elasticity.

at first i wasnt sure it was the min causing the changes , could have just been general ageing or my unheathy lifestyle / work pattern but after reading all the posts on this subject i was certain it was the minoxidil so 2 weeks ago i decided to drop it.

all was well until 2 days ago - my face is now noticably less swollen , double chin reduced and skin looking slightly better - BUT - ive started shedding !

started noticing about 30 hairs of all thickness and lengths in the bath in the morning and i think the hair i have left looks slightly thinner so im going to try a reduced amount of minoxidil mixed with an all " natural " prep ( originaire ) and a diuretic to see what happens ...

has this happened to anyone else ? i was hoping when i stopped the minoxidil the finasteride would help hold on to the hair but it doesnt seem to have happened ...

cheers all !

routine now :
1mg finpecia / 1/5th proscar per day
revita daily , nizoral shampoo weekly
origniare thickening spray and styling cream
