More reason to avoid finasteride

See the other thread about this for my thoughts on this.

Also, I think your reaction to this story is entirely wrong. You read this article, and then conclude: "it causes cancer". If you actually read the article, they say they don't know what role finasteride plays in this, or if it even causes cancer. They simply noticed a slight statistical deviation that supports this theory, and released a warning due to it. You are completely misconstruing the article.

Also, why is this all getting media attention? The breast cancer warning has already been on Finasteride for as long as I can remember?

"The health agency said Thursday it's updating the labelling for generic finasteride medications to include information about rare reports of breast cancer in men."

"most of the reports have been in association with the 5mg formulation."

"Based on the currently available evidence, it is not known with certainty whether finasteride can cause breast cancer, nor can this possibility be ruled out at this point in time."

OH NOES! IF YOU TAKE THE finasteride YOU WILL 100% GET THE CANCERS!!!

Jesus, I mean, almost everything now-a-days can be linked back to higher cancer rates. There's even some reports that whole milk gives you a greater chance of prostate cancer. You know what your best defense against cancer is? Eat healthy, exercise, get lots of rest.

It can cause inflammation which can cause micro calcifications in the prostrate which can in later years develop into aggressive cancer.

This BULLSHIT doesn't fly with me.

Milk is a natural drink that people take. Finasteride is a crucial enzyme inhibitor endoctrine disrupting drug that, inter alia, shrinks the prostrate unnaturally. It crosses the blood/brain barrier and messes up critical neutrosteroid production in the brain. Yes, it does.

You trying to make pararels is pathetic. I'm sorry for being angry with you, it's not you personally, its the larger audience out that that share similar epic levels of ignorance as yourself. The ignorance is bad enough but when i see attempts to "rationalise" it like this, i can't hold back.

Male breast cancer has been reported in a small number of patients worldwide with both the 1 mg and 5 mg formulations of finasteride, though most of the reports have been in association with the 5mg formulation.

Minimize your risk by using lower amounts of the drug. Best to avoid it all together though.

You are confusing things. First, breast cancer is not the same as prostate cancer. Evidence indicates finasteride may very slightly increase the risk of breast cancer; Merck has never said otherwise, and the warning for breast cancer has been on their webpage and PI for years. No one is arguing this fact. The problem is that the evidence supporting this fact is lacking, and it seems like it's difficult to draw a causal conclusion based on the limited number of cases thus far. To add to the fact, I’ve only seen this occurring with older men taking the 5MG version for BPH. I've never heard of a guy ever getting breast cancer from 1mg. If anyone has seen this though, please provide a link.

Secondly, I don't believe Merck has ever claimed Finasteride prevents prostate cancer. In fact, I don't believe it is legal for them to say this, unless the fact has been founded by the FDA. This conclusion was reached based on an independent study conducted in 2003. This study was done on somewhere around 18,000 men (average age of around 50) and it concluded that it reduced prostate cancer in these men by something like 25%. However, they also noticed a slight increase in more aggressive (deadly) cancers, but it isn't clear whether these would have occurred anyway, or were simply found more easily because of the shrunken prostate. There is still a ton of debate about the FDA's warning a few months back saying it increases risk of prostate cancer. I personally believe this warning was premature, and needlessly created a lot of panic in the community and a headache for doctors. Further studies should have been conducted that draw a clearer conclusion before a warning was released. However, on the other hand, it shows you that the FDA is bring pro-active at least!
