Around last november/december I was researching hair loss because (probably why most people do) it was apparent that I was losing my hair. Anyways I started with nizoral shampoo and 3 months of 1mg generic finpecia I bought from some online pharmacy. I started with 1/4 mg, couldn't tell if anything was happening, so I upped it to 1/2, same story so I went to 1mg and continued 1mg with what I recall was a fair amount of success.
At first I wasn't at all certain if the drug was doing anything until I noticed my acne had pretty much magically disappeared as well as washing my hair in the shower WAY less hair was coming off onto my hands. In-fact I would say almost none at all after being on 1mg for a month. This success was pretty short lived as it didn't take very long for my shedding to pick back up. Anyways after the finpecia ran out I bought some 5mg fincar that I split into fourths just for the sake of saving money. I continued on the with no issues for a while, but my shedding was still happening, and so I was just unsure if finasteride was helping much at all anymore.
That said while I was on finasteride I don't think my shedding ever picked up to where it was pre-finasteride, but I was still shedding and questioning the efficacy of it. Year in review for me: finasteride may have prevented my hairling from receding, but I've continued thinning on my crown which is much more noticable than it was a year ago. Still not really noticable unless the right lighting or hair is wet, but it's definitely progressed.
Now with the fact finasteride may have still been SLOWING (not preventing) my hair loss why would I quit? After being on finasteride for a bit I started getting anxiety. I do think the anxiety started some time after switching to fincar from finpecia (probably a few months after being on fincar), but I don't see why it would be related as the inhibition of dht would have been roughly the exact same. Anyways the anxiety was always very mild and would go away on its own within a few minutes. I suspected it was related to the finasteride, did some googling and found some others had similar experiences. Anyways it was pretty mild and easy to deal with and honestly I didn't care too much so I continued use telling myself it hasn't gotten worse. Anyways around the beginning of this month I had a REALLY bad episode of anxiety I was even throwing up and just having a really bad time overall. I decided to quit finasteride that very day. I went to the doctors as well and had some blood work but everything seemed fine there. The anxiety from that one really bad day has persisted, but now after over 3 weeks since then and being off finasteride I can say it's mostly completely dissipated and I am feeling much better.
Tldr: Was losing hair, bought 3 months generic finpecia and nizoral shampoo. very short lived success there shedding was already picking up again before finpecia ran out. Continued with 1.25mg fincar more of the same except after being on it a while I started getting anxiety. Anxiety was always very mild and managable except for around the beginning of this month I had such a bad day of anxiety I came off finasteride that very day and have stayed off since. Now nearly a month later I'm feeling mostly better again (probably not 100% better, but close as it continues getting slightly better almost every day).
Anyways my question is what should I do next? I honestly think finasteride had nearly stopped working for me entirely at this point because after being off it for almost a month now the shedding has been pretty much the same as it was a month ago while still on it. I don't know if I would really want to continue finasteride either because of my previous experience with anxiety.
I'm still on nizoral, and if I add minoxidil could I expect to increase the life of my hair a decent amount? I'm also interested in ru58841 if anyone can tell me more about it. Or if anyone has had anxiety from finasteride as well I would like to hear their experiences.
