I am a 23 years old Male and here's my story:
I've had a reasonably thick hair and an excellent hair texture until I was 21. My texture was so good that I could just style my hair with wet hands and it'll stay like that like I've used hair gel and I had no hair loss at all, none. But at the age of 21 suddenly I started shedding my hair way too heavily and that too suddenly.
Now I think it is important to tell this side story as well...
Probably two years before my shedding started I noticed blood after a bowel movement. It was a*** fissure. In few months it became so bad that I bled almost everytime I went to toilet. I was ashamed to see a doctor and took some OTC meds which gave no results. It was after like one and half year of bleeding on a daily basis I started to lose my hair. I doubted whether it was genetic. Because my hairline was not receding. There was no excessive thinning on the crown. Rather I was losing hair from all over. Even from the back and the sides. It was even later I learned having low iron could probably cause hair loss (mostly affects women though, due to their periods). I was low on Iron, and I had all the symptoms of it which I then realized. So I took iron tabs (didn't tell Doctor about my bleeding which I regret now). Anyway, shedding didn't stop. Finally, I went to see a doctor who is very specialised in these a*** issues (Side note: I laughed while typing that). 3 weeks of treatment and my *** was good as new. And I regret not paying him a visit two years back, he would have fixed it in a week then and I would have saved lot of pain, blood and may be even hair.
Now after that and a few months I noticed much low hair shedding. I continued iron tabs. Even my texture was getting better and my hair was getting thicker. I was starting to forget about all the hair loss issues.
Suddenly, (almost after a 8 months later) there it was again... sudden hair shedding.. out of nowhere. I didn't understand what was going on. So I went for a blood test. There it was... I am high on Iron now!! And it can also, perhaps, be a reason for hair shedding. So I stopped taking iron. I donated blood as it was the safe way to get rid of more iron in my body. It's almost 3 weeks since I donated blood and over a month since I've stopped taking iron pills. My hair continues to shed. But now I feel like somethings are getting better. I feel the texture is better now. I do really hope it is the Iron issue and it is said that if it is iron problem it might take 6-12 months to get my hair fixed. So I am thinking I'll just see where it'll go for next 6 months. If I don't see any improvements I'll may be go for finasteride and Rogaine. If that's the case, I'll hopefully regrow all the hair since, as I've mentioned, I still have a full head of hair but it's just less thick in volume.
Any thoughts?
As you can see, I signed up in September 2014. I fixed my fissure issue in 2015 and my hair got better that I forgot I even had an account here, until I tried to sign up today!
