I am 21 years old and have always had a big forehead. However, over the last 2 years I have noticed more of a decrease in hair. Over the past year I have noticed an even larger decrease. All in all, I have very minimal receding hairline. Maybe a half inch on each side--a 2 on the receding hair line scale. However, it appears I will continually be receding until I do something to stop it.

My 23 year old brother has a much larger receding and I am afraid I will follow the same path. My dad also has a large receding hairline.

So, last year I began using minoxidil 5% for a few months. I got busy with school and eventually forgot all about using it. Now I have started back up and have been using it everyday for a month.

I am more educated on minoxidil now and understand that if i stop using it--- I can lose more hair than when I started. As i mentioned earlier I have about a half inch receding, but on each side I have about a quarter inch of fuzz. The fuzz is very small fragile hair. If this fragile hair would grow stronger--I would be extremely happy with my hair and would not be posting a thread on hair loss sites. I do not think the minoxidil cause this fuzz to regrow, but it could have helped keeping in there.

I would prefer not to get a prescription-- I am still under my parents' insurance. However, I could really use some advice on everything and anything.

What should I do?, do I need to commit to minoxidil 5% long term?, does minoxidil even work on receding hairlines? Any help would be appreciated.

If you are going to use minoxidil, yes you need to commit to it. As far as receding hair lines go, from what I gather on this forum it is the hardest form of balding to fight. But I'm a diffuse thinner myself and no expert. So take it with a grain of salt. I am still under my Father's insurance policy and got finasteride no problem, it's just not covered since it's not considered essential. I pay around 30 bucks a month for finasteride. I don't know why you wouldn't want to make a doctor's appointment and ask for it, I'm sure they'll give it to you no problem. My doctor was bald himself and pretty sympathetic, we're young men and shouldn't have to worry about our hair like this after all.

If I were you, I would go and read this http://www.hairlosstalk.com/interact/showthread.php/70534-Questions-READ-THIS-FIRST! , this guy will give you some great info, so read it all carefully. Hope this helps.

Hey man. I have experienced similar to what you are going through.

I did Rogaine (minoxidil) for 2 years on my own over the counter before exploring other options. I wish I would have gone to a specialist earlier. Google some hair loss doctors in your area and go in for a consultation. Maybe they will prescribe Propecia. But better yet, they will give you a professional opinion. ACT NOW! That's my advice. Because in my case, and many others, hair loss gets progressively worse. Best of luck.
