Hey Everyone! I've been reading these forums for many years, but decided to finally post my story:

I started losing my hair when I was 19 years old. I remember having bad dandruff, and an itchy scalp. I was waking-up in the morning and seeing hair on the pillow, and hair thinning. I am a diffused thinner. I did start using Nizorol, and that helped a little bit with the itching (but not so much with the hair loss).

A year after that, after someone noticing my hair was thinning, I went to the doctor and demanded he put me on Propecia. I had very good success with the drug. I had my on days and off days. But overall, it maintained my hair VERY well for 9 years. Yes, taking 1 pill of 1 mg a day for 9 years worked well.

I had some periods of sheds, and I still had hair falling out during a shower--but overall, the hair stayed fairly thick. To this day I have never had anyone comment on any thin hair. My hair has maintained and looks thick with no bald spots.

About a year ago I noticed my shedding was increasing, and my hair started to feel lighter and lighter. I upped the dosage to two pills (2 mg) of Propecia, but it didn't help.

After a year of continuing with hair loss, I saw my dermatologist and he put me on Dutasteride (generic version, so my insurance covers it). I started in March of 2017. I started with 1 mg a day (two pills) for a month, and now down to 1 pill (.5 mg) a day.

The shedding continued for the first 3.5 months. I noticed a slight increase in the shedding, but because I was already shedding so much over the year, it didn't feel like it was an incredible increase. I was definitely getting over 100 hairs in the shower, on the towel, and easily able to get hairs on my hairs when I put my fingers through it.

I feel the last 2 weeks the shedding has decreased substantially. I still have some hair loss, but not a massive amount.

I have lost a lot of the thickness over the last year, and am hoping to get it back after a longer period on dutasteride.

Other things I use:

-spironolactone Cream (S5 cream) - over the last month
-Nizorol twice a week (but I feel like it has lost effectiveness)
-Dutasteride .5 (every day, before I sleep)
-Minoxidil (over the last 3 years, twice a day, Kirkland brand)
-HairMax Laser (kinda a waste, maybe, but I just do it cause why not...)

SIDES?

-No real sides during my time on Propecia. A bit of a decline to the sex drive at first, but nothing major. I still ejaculated every day and was always horny.

-On dutasteride, the first 2 months I was EXTRA horny. My sex drive went down. Now, 4.5 months in, it has declined. Not incredibly low, but I still notice a difference. I am still able to ejaculate and orgasm, but a slight decrease in the amount of semen.

-On dutasteride, a little bit more fat retention, but I have just upped my cardio and it is helping a bit.

-A LITTLE bit of fogginess--Not an intense amount. But it could be due to the dutasteride?

FUTURE?

-I will continue with dutasteride. No issues with it, really. I just really hope it helps me, as Propecia did for many years. Anything I can do to see more hair regrowth? Anything I can do about the itch? I still have an itch and some flakiness...

Another thing I want to mention: I work out A LOT. About 2 hours a day. I lift weights and do cardio. I am in very good shape. I wonder: Is there a chance the increase in "free testosterone" may still be causing some hair loss? Any way to lower that? Does working out help lower that/use that "free testosterone" or does it just increase it more?

Thanks, and hope that covers everything. I don't want to post pics or anything, but maybe if you email me?

good to hear your story. I'm surprised a Derm would prescribe Dutasteride as it's not licenced for male pattern baldness - or is it in Canada?

good luck, don't worry about the sheds - that's often a sign that it's working

It is not FDA Approved in Canada, but my derm said he looked at the medical stats and decided it is very similar to Propecia but with increased benefit and decided to put me on it. He wanted a blood test first to make sure my levels were ok before I started. They looked fine and things are good.

One more thing: I find that taking Reactine helps a bit with the itchy scalp. I have allergies so I sometimes take it. When I do, my scalp feels better too.

Anyone else have a similar solution?

Strength training can increase testosterone, pure cardio exercise can reduce it slightly so possibly you're balanced out. Yes free T can cause increase in baldness as a result of more conversion to Dht. But instead of guessing, get blood tests to establish some baselines.

Also there was a study using a herbal supplement, Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) root that showed a significant increase in total and free testosterone, declines in SHBG and improved muscular force. Reference here:

Henkel RR, Basset SH, et al, Tongat Ali as a Potential Herbal Supplement for Physically Active Male and Female Seniors-a Pilot Study. Phtother Res. 2013; [Epub ahead of print].

It can be found in the product Adpt-Adrenal. I have no affiliation with the authors or product manufacturer.

So, at almost 5 months in, I can certainly say shedding has stopped. My hair also seems to feel a bit thicker. Over the last year, with propecia wearing off, I was getting thinner and thinner. I noticed it most after a shower since I was starting to be able to see my scalp. Now, after a shower, it does look at thin.

My temples are also staring to getting small, thin hairs, I can try to get some pics of it at some point this weekend and post them here.

I'll update with any changes as they come along.

I use minoxidil first, let it dry a bit (10 minutes) then add a thin layer all over the hair. I don't like the smell, especially on a hot summer day.

I feel it has helped maybe 5-10%. It's hard to say because I started dutasteride around the same time as S5 cream. I do think The success is mostly due to the dutasteride.

OP, did your itch and sebum go up during the initial shedding/high libido stage?

Yes it did. I felt very oily actually. Even after washing my hair, after 4 hours or so my scalp felt oily. It was like that for the first 3 months. Went away after 4 months.

I was my hair every other day now. With Selsum Blue (with zinc) followed by Nizorol 2%.
