Hi everyone. It all started just four days ago. My gf mentioned to me that if I ever was to go bald, it will start with the crown prompting a thorough analysis of my hair. It turns out that I can't classify myself on the Norwood scale but my hair is just gradually thinning all over. It has always been thin in diameter but now it's thinning as in fewer hairs per square inch. At this point (I am 35) it still has the appearance of being normal but in reality, especially when wet, it's pretty pathetic. Alarmed I googled my way up and down the web and like to summarize what I have learned so far. Let me know if I am getting things wrong here.

1. I shed but nothing abnormal. From other posts, I figure that the amount of shedding is not indicative of hairloss, instead watch for the actual thinning of single hairs.

2. Propecia is effective and prevents further loss with maybe a slight increase in total number of hairs.

3. Proscar is cheaper but cumbersome to split.

4. Minoxidil is effective to regrow hair but does not prevent further normal loss.

5. Nizoral is good 3x times a week for general scalp health.

I have an appoint with the dermatologists next week intending to get a prescription for Propecia. Along with that, I plan on using Minoxidil 5% and Nizoral.

I do have some questions though.

1. I have already used minoxidil for a few days now and the itch is quite irritating. Any remedies? Is 2% less aggravating?

2. Because I have thinning all around what's the best way to apply minoxidil? Right now I am focusing on the crown area. I figure the spray may not work because my hair is still to thick for that.

3. How do you convince a doctor to prescribe Proscar and how do you split the pills in 1/5s?

Thanks!

I'm jealous..35 and losing your hair. I'd kill for that luxury! Anyways, it sounds like you know what's up. Here's some answer to your questions.

Minoxidil irritation is a b**ch. But it DOES go away after a couple weeks. DO NOT SCRATCH! It will just make matters worse...plus it won't help. Nizoral shampoo is GREAT for relieving the itch though :). Now, a lot of people will tell you to drench your head in minoxidil... but that's not the case. Go with 1mL total to all thinning areas for 6 months... if you don't see ANY results by then, try bumping it up to 2mL per application. If you STILL don't see any results, then go for a higher concentration of minoxidil. Start with 5% however.

I have no idea about getting proscar though. I had to buy mine from overseas without a prescription.

Good luck. Just remember, it's for life. Once you quit, it's back to square one.

1. Get on TGEL "Anti itch control" that stuff is amazing

2. Educate your selfs on the basics of Finasteride. If you convince your Doctor that you know for a fact that you understand that taking more than 1mg of Finasteride is in no way going to benefit you, he might prescribe it. I imagine the primary concern of docs is people taking the entire 5mg tab when prescribing Proscar for male pattern baldness. I had to convince my Doctor I knew the basic ends and outs of the proper dose. He gave a perscription for 3 refills and told me he wouldn't give me another prescription if I tried to get another one within a year(3 refills of Proscar should last around 14 months when cut into 1mg.

Proscar costs about $215 a year

Propecia costs about $720 a year

Thanks, that sounds like the best approach. Unfortunately, I don't have any good relationship with a dermatologist just yet, so I may need to get Propecia for a while.

How do you cut them up though? I have no clue at this point how to do it effectively. I looked at pill cutters but they don't do 1/5th but 1/2 and maybe 1/4s. Which one are you using?

Until now I have been applying it just to the worst area in the back. Is spreading it evenly across the entire head just as effective? I did read that increasing the dosage does not increase effectiveness. But to me it defies logic that using a 1ml dosage on a large area is as effective as using the same dosage for the entire head.

Well, logically, more is better. But not in the case of minoxidil. 1mL is all you need across the whole head. Since roughly 5% of the entire application is absorbed into the skin and diffused through the scalp, doctors have figured out a dosage that is sufficient. In my case, 1ml twice a day hasn't done anything for me, but I'm not willing to give up on it yet. So at the 8 month mark (about a week ago) I started applying 2mL per application just to see if it will help me any. I seriously doubt it, but it's worth a shot. If that doesn't work, then I'll move up to 12.5% Xandrox (12.5% minoxidil and 5% Azelaic acid in lotion form).

Thanks, I have been doing some reading here and it's amazing that once you know the right keywords, a lot of information surfaces. Looks like I am a diffuse thinner that needs to apply the corn row method...

Now I just need to figure out what TGEL is.
