Hello,

I am new to this board. I never imagined that I would ever consider any treatments for baldness since none of my family members (my father and the brothers of my mother and father) have any problem with baldness. My father lost his hair on the temples since his early 20s, but baldness never seemed to progress any further.

I am 26 and in the past months my hair shed a lot, especially while taking a shower (~30-40 hairs). I have noticed that my hair was thinning a bit over the years, but I never experienced any shedding (no more than 10 hairs while in the shower). I have to add that my hairline does not recede, I only see diffuse thining on the top.

This shedding basically started after I moved to a new city to start grad school and my lifestyle had changed a lot (I used to work out quite often and my diet was definitely better). Is it possible that this change of lifestyle caused this problem? If I improve my lifestyle will I be able to get where I was before? (Unfortunately due to my heavy work load this is darn hard!)

Since this was going on for a couple of months only, I would like to do something about it before it is too late. Do you guys have anything to suggest to stop this thinning and shedding? I wouldn't like to get into propecia right away because I am afraid of some of the side effects (low ibido etc) reported here!

I am thinking about trying rogaine, revivogen and continue using nizoral twice a week. How does this sound for a start? I heard that rogaine (minoxidil) initially increases hair shedding. Is this true? How long does this last?

Thanks in advance for your precious advice.

That same sh*t happend to me, thats the beggining of your hairloss and you need to stop it now. Use 5% minoxidil with spironolactone or Revivogen on the temples once or twice a day as your schedule permits. minoxidil causes shedding for some but the hair grows back thicker. I did not get a shed till I was on it for 90 days so I guess it can take awhile. Good luck.

dont listen to the guys here. Use propecia. Its the best hairloss treatment there is. The majority of guys dont get sexual side effects. And minoxidil ussually doesnt cause shedding and if it does, its nothing dramatic and not noticeable. At least i didnt get any shedding with it, maybe a tad but nothing noticeable.

Younguy is right only 2% experienced these side effects, some people here think its more but you never see articles or news stories on it. The people who have done well never post here they just go on with there lives and full heads of hair.

You experienced posters should be ashamed.....

Mate the first thing you need to do is go and see a doctor and have a full blood test done. Do not subject yourself to minoxidil and propecia etc unless it is absolutely necessary..

One of the only ways you can decipher if you have male pattern baldness is to rule out other forms of hair loss. A doctor will help you do it........

There is no doubt that these boards are invaluable for information but people tend to suggest propecia and minoxidil on a whim....go see a doctor and dermatoligist/endocrinologist etc first then decide...

I think the collective experience is that most doctors who have been consulted by our posters would not know male pattern baldness if it ran over them and then backed up to finish the job.

Yeah, Doctors basically have availability to the same information you can find on the internet and only you know you and how your situation has progressed. Truthfully male pattern baldness is the cause of 99% of hair loss in men and thinking it is caused by something else is wishfull thinking for the most part. denial..... its not a river in egypt

Get on a regimen fast and you can save your hair, good luck.

Shaddup. Get on Propecia. Use minoxidil.

The chance that you're losing your scalp hair (and nothing else), and you're male, and you're in/close to your 20s, and it's NOT male pattern baldness ... is statistically insignificant.

Its wishful thinking that hair loss is due to "other causes" not related to male pattern baldness, but the reality is, unless you're a female, the chances your hair loss is due to something else is slim to none.

You should evaluate what medications you're on, and if they have any strong ties to hair loss as a side effect, but if its thinning in a definite pattern, then you have your answer, and you can be 100% confident its male pattern baldness.

Thank you guys for your replies. I already scheduled an appointment with my doctor for a blood test and a general health checkup. Fortunately I am still at the very beginning of hairloss (I still have my hair at my temples and overall my hair is still pretty dense).I am thinking of starting with a DHT blocker for a while and see how it goes before using other products that would stimulate hair growth since I don't have any problem in that area yet. Prevention is the best cure I guess, so would you recommend starting with propecia and minoxidil even at this early stage?

Thanks again,

N

PS: To HairlossTalk: well I believed that male pattern baldness may not have been the cause because of the excellent family history. I was thinking that it might have been due to some vitamin deficiency because of my poor diet...To optimistic I guess
