Ben's right, and new techniques also tend to be quite niche for a long time before enough surgeons get to practice their techniques and it becomes a viable mainstream procedure.
Take FUE for example, as a technique it is now in decline with many of the better surgeons while strip continues to get better and better. The 'latest thing' is often a trend where 'tried and tested' can just go on and on getting petter and better.
We can see similar comparisons all the time from all kinds of progressive standards, just look at plasma televisions, a 'better' technology comes along all the time, LCD, LED, OLED etc. yet plasma screens are still available and get better each year. It often comes down to marketing and the perception that the 'newest thing' must be better that last years thing.
