Nizoral does work if used regularly

I haven't told anyone in my family that I've been on treatments and on multiple occasions they've commented on my hair. I thought it was just me thinking my hair was getting darker and of better quality but it really is, using Nizoral M-W-F for the last 5-6 months has really helped a LOT. Just today my sister commented on the darkness of my hair and said it also looks longer than normal but I had just had my hair cut exactly a week ago. My hair is definitely growing thicker and faster than it has for awhile and I think it's equally attributable to both nizoral and minoxidil.

I'm only using the 1% OTC version, now I'm wanting to supercharge things and possibly get a Rx for finasteride but will probably wait until the new yr since I don't want to experience a shed around the holidays for family parties

Consistency in treatment is definitely key, which brings up the question, what do you guys do when you go on vacation for a week, do you take your treatments with you or just some, etc?

I will try posting a hair color comparison shot

99% sure you are imagining things. Nizoral is extremely weak compared to other treatments. I doubt it can stop hairloss on its own let alone regrow. Family members are notorious for lieing about the state of people's hair. The state of your hair can vary a lot from month to month, sometimes even appearing to look better when in reality male pattern baldness is still progressing

By drying out your hair the nizoral shampoo can give the appearance of thicker hair by fluffing it up but it is purely a visual trick/cosmetic

Reason for stopping on "vacation" it isn't really a vacation but what if you're going to say a bachelor party at a destination and you're sharing a room with others, wouldn't you feel awkward trying to hide the fact that you're taking meds for something like hair loss? Especially if the others are similar in age and probably aren't dealing with hair loss?

I have been using Regenepure DR (which contains 1% ketoconazole and no chemicals like SLS) for 6 months now. I use it everyday at night, so in the mornings I can just use water to quickly wash my hair and style it so my hair doesn't look dried out. I have noticed I shed less in the shower and that my hair strands themselves have gotten thicker. My hair also grows faster but I think that can be attributed to the caffeine in the shampoo.

If you have the money, I suggest switching to Regenepure DR, when I used nizoral it did more harm than good to my hair and damaged it. Also with nizoral, you can''t use it everyday.

I am not on any other hairloss treatments, and I only got on this shampoo as a preventive measure.

Also I do not have any visible hairloss.

Here's the picture that I forgot to upload when I started this thread. The picture on the left is from June 2014, and on the right is from about 2 weeks ago about a week after a haircut (buzzcut on a #2). I started using Nizoral at the end of May so I've been using it 3x week since then, I think it's a noticable improvement in quality of hair if nothing else. You can see that the color of my hair is in my opinion much darker (hence the comment from a family member)

Wow that looks great. Are you only on Nizoral? I'm currently using minoxidil and nizoral. It's only been a week though

I've been on Minoxidil 5% since January 2014, but at the point of the first picture I was already on it for 6 months or so, so I believe the results from these 2 pictures were more largely due to the Nizoral, at least from a hair quality standpoint, you'll see that the areas that I don't apply minoxidil are darker and thicker, I only apply minoxidil to areas of thinning where you can see scalp. At this point I'd just be happy to maintain the results I've got so far for the next 5-10 years at least, but I might need to add to the regimen depending on luck, or lack of.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like when used together it really jumpstarted your success. I heard minoxidil can have better results after 12 months compared to six as well. I'm hoping to have success like yours.

There are quite a few studies that all suggest Nizoral decreases shedding, increases % of hair in anagen phase, and increases hair shaft diameter. So according to those studies it certainly does help with male pattern baldness.

Most people on here will tell you it does little to nothing at all and provide no reasoning to back up their conclusion.

I tend to believe the studies.

jeffshair: your results are far more likely to be due to the growth stimulating properties of the minoxidil that you are using rather than due to the Nizoral shampoo.

shyyguy123: the studies that you are referring to were carried out on very small sample sizes, and their methodology and reliability is also questionable. Also, most of these studies were performed by people who were involved in selling or marketing the product. It is a well-known fact among the more experienced users of these forums that Nizoral does close to nothing for male pattern baldness.

Sabbah: I am yet to see such proof.

I tend to think Nizoral did make a difference for me, if you see in my other pictures it looks like in areas of my scalp where minoxidil wasn't being applied there was some pretty significant redness. Maybe I had a case of seborrheic dermatitis which is what nizoral helps with and by treating this condition it helped me. I never went to a doctor to determine if I had this condition though, so I can't say conclusively, it's just an educated guess at this point.

It's just hard to believe that Nizoral would work faster and better than minoxidil alone. Not even people on finasteride and minoxidil get that kind of thickening.

Yes, Ketoconazole does help to decrease shedding, increase the number of hairs into the anagen phase, increase hair shaft diameter, and quite a few other things actually that are beneficial in fighting Androgenetic Alopecia. Ketoconazole does have very healthy properties in fighting Androgenetic Alopecia, it's helped me tremendously and is crucial to my regimen at treating my male pattern baldness. I don't know why it's overlooked often by many in this forum, stating that it hardly does anything without backing up their conclusion. There is scientific evidence that it does help to fight Androgenetic Alopecia.

Nizoral has helped keep my scalp clean and dandruff-free, but I don't think it has done much to help fight my hair loss. I used Nizoral alone to try to treat my hair loss for a few months, and it didn't work. I realized then that if I want to save my hair, I have no choice but to jump on finasteride or dutasteride. I've since been taking dutasteride daily, and I've had great results. I am continuing to use the Nizoral shampoo alongside the dutasteride, but I have no doubt that it is the dutasteride that is doing 99% of the work.

My brother regrew about 80% of his hair back on Nizoral alone. He literally went from a Norwood 5 with balding everywhere to NW2. Although it was very likely his hair loss was related to chronic inflammation, he had a very red sore looking scalp covered in nasty pimples for years

The amount of studies on nizoral is overwhelming at this point. It does grow hair its just most of the people on hair loss forums with thousands of posts have very aggresive hair loss so when it only slows down their hair loss they think its not working IMHO.

I have very aggressive male pattern baldness and Ketoconazole helped treat my Androgenetic Alopecia a lot, I'm so glad that I have it in my regimen. Ketoconazole has many healthy properties in fighting hair loss. Though, it's far too weak to halt Androgenetic Alopecia for most people and is why so many say that the medication hardly does anything to help. Ketoconazole is an incredibly helpful medication to use if you're extremely prone to inflammation from Androgenetic Alopecia related problems.

It's weird, in this book "The Complete Book of Hair Loss Answers" Ketoconazole is a drug that can cause hair loss.

"It is important to note that the incidence of hair loss occurring from the vast majority of these drugs is infrequent, often only one to two percent of users, and when it does occur is usually happens only after prolonged use of the medication. Many common medications are listed as possibly causing hair loss. They do not usually cause hair loss in most people, but have been documented to cause hair loss in some people.
Some drugs that are prescribed to help grow hair or slow hair loss, such as minoxidil, spironolactone, and oral contraceptives, are also included in this list of drugs that cause hair loss. This is not a mistake, but rather illustrates the complex ways that bodies respond to medications."
