Only my dad's dad went bald, other than that everyone in the family has a full head of hair so I haven't got male pattern baldness. The thing is my hair has gone really thin and is falling out like crazy over the last six months. What does this mean?

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but I think your going on the same path as your dad's dad. It sucks, but its not the end of the world. Start some of the treatments here and maybe you can turn things around. The main 3 things are, minoxidil(Rogaine), Finas(Propecia/Proscar), and Nizoral(a dandruff shampoo). I hope all goes well.

So Bob, as a moderator, I am asking you why you are here? If you can't contribute to the purpose of the forum, I am going to have to make you go bye bye!

Tread carefully, grasshopper.

check your hair loss pattern, is it the same as your dad's dad ?
if it is you hve male pattern baldness, if not, you arent.

There are many reason you can lose hair other than male pattern baldness. but many ppl in this forum, like B.Lee, know so little about hair loss and claim everything is male pattern baldness, they really can't help you.

I suggest you to see a doctor first.

Gee, I don't recall claiming that all hair loss is related to male pattern baldness (actually I don't know the data on this, DO YOU?). Moreover, I don't recall saying that I am expert on hair loss. We simply refer to data studies and our own experience.

Anyone who thinks we can replace an exam by a physician is a tad silly. By all means, go see what your average doctor knows about hair loss.

What I can say is that if you are basing opinion on "hair patterns" of loss between father and son, then YOUR knowledge of hair loss and male pattern baldness is suspect.

So, present some info here or perhaps remain silent in the future.

I went to the doctor and he said that I don't have male pattern baldness because I'm losing hair everywhere and not in the "normal" areas. Did a few tests such as checked my thyroid gland, adreanal gland and testes for cancer. Also blood tests for testosterone, blood count, blood biochemisty and thyroid. Everything was normal so I'm checked in to see a dermotologist in a couple of weeks.

I found out that my grandpa didn't go bald until in his middle age and I'm only 24.

This doctor didn't seem to know much, he didn't even know what Saw Palmetto was but at least he realises he's no expert on hair loss and has pointed me in the right direction.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll keep the board updated as my condition might mirror others who need help.

By the way I read that in the states it takes a few weeks to get back the blood tests. In Australia I called up the Doctor in the morning, went and saw him about lunchtime, straight after went and gave blood. Next afternoon went to see him again to get the results. Best of all it's all free! The dermotologist will cost though, but will get half of it back.

Went to the dermatologist today (someone else cancelled there appointment). He said most likely androgenetic hair loss (male pattern baldness). However to be certain he did an upper and lower scalp biopsy. I'll get the results in just over a week.

He said that if it's male pattern baldness I'll have to be on rogaine for as long as I want hair and as soon as I stop my hair loss will quickly catch up as if I hadn't used the products at all.

He also said that Nizoral was good but Saw Palmetto was a waste of time.

Did he mention propecia?
