Not trying to scare, just my honest opinion of my finasteride sides

Hi everyone,
I am a 27 year old male from new zealand suffering from genral thinning in crown and temples, not major yet but enough to send me to the Dr to look at products to help, as I wanted to hang on to my hair until at least my wedding next year.
After talking it over at the doctors I/we decided that a finasteride/ketoconazol 2% combo would be a good start for me, he gave me proscar 5mg and told me to cut it into quaters as that was the cost cutting way to get the finasteride I needed. (as you all probably know!)

I wasn't in the slightest bit worried about any sides, and was even prepared for a little sexual sides to start with. So I started taking the finasteride quaters about four weeks ago with the best hopes, I even stayed away from the scaremongering sites after reading about them here so I didn't have any pre conceptions about sides to be concerned about.

1 week in and all was going well, no real sides to report, although I did have a little bit of itchiness on my back, thought the cat might have put fleas in the room or something, but my fiance said no bites or anything she could see.
Nearly two weeks in and I started getting testicular pain, switching from one testicle to the other and sometimes in both, and LOTS of movement in my testicles when standing waiting for the shower to get warm etc. (Moving up and down, rolling slightly) It was around maybe half the time I was awake, but after reading up many people said this went away so I carried on.
I also started noticing slight erectile difficulties, a softer erection, I could still have sex and it was still pleasureable, just not as hard, and the consistency of my semen was definately thinner.
I also noticed difficulty getting to sleep, now I am GOOD at sleeping : ) but I would lay awake for 3 quaters of an hour when it would usually take me five minutes to get to sleep, maybe I was a lil worried about the other sides and hairloss in genral and thinking a bit more than usual and that could have contributed, also stated waking up more during the night.

About three weeks in and i was getting burning/dry eyes during the day and minor headaches as well as continuous testicle pain and (And i know people will jump all over me on this one, like I said just my honest opinion on what happened to ME PERSONALLY, i am in no way sayin this would happen to everyone) my left testicle had reduced in size! only very slightly, but most of the pain had gone from that testicle and it was definately noticibly different in size from the right one. Still lots of movement from them when standing naked also.

Mouth ulcers- LOTS of them that just would not clear up. I had hardly ever had them before, but they just started popping up on my cheeks and my inner lip like crazy. I tried salty water rinses, bonjella pain numbing antiseptic gel but those lil buggers just stayed around.

Arount 6 days ago my hands started feeling like there was a crazy amount of pressure in them around 1pm (give or take a couple of hours) and my veins were HUGE! I usually have slightly visible veins but seriously, they were popping like a body builders, and my arms felt dull and heavy.
My eye dryness continued and I started getting a conjunctivitis like goop in my right eye after a nights sleep, like the sleep you usually get in there, but ten times more, and I when I would wake up during the night my tounge would be totally dry and slightly numb/swollen as well.

I was scared to talk to my partner about it, It took all I had to tell her about my hairloss in the first place (although i'm sure she noticed but was nice about it) and now the one thing that was supposed to save me from it, at least until our wedding, was causing all these problems, but I did. We talked it over and she convinced me that hairloss was not a big deal to her, she loved me for who I am, not my hair, and she would rather me be healthy with no hair than suffer my way through to our wedding. She supported me in getting the treatment in the first place because the original discovery of hairloss was causing me sooo much greif.
We have our first baby on the way, and she wants a big family, and like she said "Anything that causes constant pain in your testicles cant be good for them!"
(Not that I am saying finasteride will stop you having a baby, affect your sperms swimming ability or anything, i am defiantely not)
I gave up on the finasteride two days ago, my ulcers are clearing up, my veins are returning to normal (Def not as noticible this morning thank god) my testicles still hurt at the moment but not as much, and I slept much better last night (Whether tis was because of dropping the finasteride or that I was releived after talking to my partner and not having such a ball ache i'm not sure)

I'll keep using the keto shampoo, drink my green tea and live my life as a balding guy, cause the sides certainly wern't worth it for me!
I know that some people jump on and tell others "sides were in your head, bah, rubbish no way finasteride could do that etc" but like I said, just my personal opinion on how it affected ME. Thanks for taking the time to have a read, as it was good just to get it off my chest as well.

Well finasteride is obviously not for everyone (especially not you)... Some people get some side, some lots and some none at all... However, people looking to get on finasteride should not be discouraged after reading this.... I have been on finasteride for 4 months with great results and no sides....

I suppose you could try a small dose of finasteride (0.5mg) as 1.25mg is a large amount.....

Sure, like I said in the title, I am not trying to scare anyone, or stop anyone from trying finasteride at all. There are men (LOADS of them in these forums alone, let alone the ones who are happy and don't post on forums) who have had very positive effects and no sides, and I truly wish I was one of them, and will probably wish that every day as I see my friggin hair dissapear, but for me, it sucked, and the last of the pack went in the bin.

why didnt you just sell it? or give it away for free? or try a lower dose (0.5 or 0.25mg)?

No sides here at the 8 week mark. First couple days I experienced the ball ache but very minor. Also had some bad forehead acne for the first 2 weeks, but that subsided.

Could have sold it i suppose! I'm pretty scared to try a lower dose to be honest, my right ball is still hurting today and I really don't know if I can could handle it coming back once it goes away. I went for a number two buzz cut last night anyway, and it looks okay so that might be it for this summer.

How long were you on the finasteride ?

Nearly a month all up, one thing I forgot to mention in my first post was that around the 3 week mark I did take a slightly smaller dose, cutting the proscar into sixths instead of quarters, but by then most the sides I was experiencing were in full swing.

And I'm sorry BUT -No finasteride = none of those things happening in my body whatsoever. period.

One month of finasteride = ALL of those things happening in my body. I am no hyperchondriac, havn't been to the doctors in 12 years, for anything, and all of the things I said were happening honestly were.

Off finasteride for three days = ALL of those things gone exept for the ball ache which is hanging around

Does there seem to be some sort of pattern there HT55? Just because it didnt happen to you mate, doesnt mean it doesn't happen. Some people can take pennacillin for weeks, no problem others can take it once and have SEVERE allergic reactions, do you go to pennacillin threads and say you "Highly doubt" that just one day on pennacillin could do that??

All I have to say is, you're lucky you got off when you did and that things are resolving for you:

viewtopic.php?p=464102#p464102

Refer to my discussion about the actual cause of sides with finasteride: prostatic atrophy. if you go to the anti-androgen forum, you will find it.

finasteride has little-to-no effect on spermatogenesis until ejaculation, because testosterone AND DHT stimulate spermatogenesis. However, sperm motility is largely influenced by many factors after ejaculation and is non-motile prior to emission and ejaculation. I'm in GU for med school and this is what my research using standard medical texts has shown. Decreasing prostatic fluid content of ejaculate plays a larger role than it might seem. This seemingly harmless side effect may have greater implications.

Sounds like you may have had a hypersensitivity reaction that may have caused vasculitis. I have never heard of some of the ADRs and I cannot find them in my Pharmacology text (Katzung). This is an extremely rare reaction. I consider myself to have responded rather poorly to finasteride, but I experienced transient (2-3 wk) testicular pain, difficulty achieving full arousal, etc.... those effects have since subsided. I never experienced anything that was unrelated to my genitals. I am sincerely sorry that you reacted to this drug this poorly.

Best of luck resolving that testicular pain. As one who got it pretty bad, I have nothing but sympathy for you. I remember I was out about 1.5 months ago and I had to lie to my gf by telling her I dropped the weights on my nuts in the gym and explained that might be why I couldn't perform and why I was in intense pain (It hurt to walk..). Despite the pain, I performed, but it made me seriously consider discontinuing the drug. Instead, I decreased my dose to 0.25 EOD then 0.25 daily then 0.33 mg daily and finally my present 0.5 mg daily.

No sides currently, although i have noticed more acne (damn it).

So basically 3 days post finasteride with your DHT levels still suppresed from finasteride and the the drug still in your system almost everything cleared up ? strange.

I've said this before. It's possible that there are more effects DIRECTLY as a result of serum finasteride rather than suppression of DHT. It's not likely, but it IS possible... particularly if he was having a hypersensitivity reaction.

Refresh my memory, am I supposed to impressed because you are in med school ?
