I've been on quartered proscar for 4 days. I've taken four tiny little pieces of a pill, all about 1.25 mg I guess.

Here are my side effects:

1. a clear feeling of sluggishness and loss of responsiveness. I'm a very alert and awake person and the last four days I feel like taking a nap all the time.

2. decrease in libido, although not impotent. I can get an erection pretty easily but the desire is a bit altered, I was around some hot females last night and the juices didn't seem to flow as much. I also dont' have monring erections the past four days after having them constantly for 26 years (I'm 26).

3. and the worst: My semen is water. I just cuffed one out to make sure that my ejaculation was legit and I was shocked that it was all watery, hardly any thickness at all. HOW THE HELL CAN THIS BE A SAFE DRUG and WHY ISN'T THIS IN THE MERCK SIDE EFFECTS???

So anything from above sound familiar, especially watery semen? Should I cut the quarters in half maybe? Take every other day. OR, will my body mellow itself out in a week and get used to this new drug in my body and make things go back to normal. As I type this I want to lie my head on the keyboard and pass out![/b]

Reminds me of when I first took the drug at 1.25mg a day as well. Sexual side effects started about 3 days in, lost morning wood, continued to get worse over 11 months until I finally quit, and still have yet to recover from them 20 months off.

Looking back, and my advice to you -- if you plan on taking Finasteride, do so at the lowest dosage possible. Get Propecia, not Proscar, and cut it into 8ths, 0.125mg. You can take it every 2nd or 3rd day and likely won't have any issues inhibiting DHT, since it can take up to a week for DHT levels to return to baseline after a single dose.

And yes, reduced/watery semen is a listed side effect of the drug. How are you not aware of this? I will say, though -- if you are getting side effects this early, they could possibly get better or worse. I toughed it out thinking they would resolve if I stayed on the drug, but they didn't. So if they don't for you, you should quit.

I'd also recommend getting blood tests while on the drug as outlined at propeciahelp.com, so if things do go awry with your hormones should you discontinue (particularly Testosterone), you'll have results to compare against. Hopefully you won't have any such issues and things will resolve for you, but it will be insurance just in case, to prove to docs that everything isn't "in your head".

Best of luck.

Whao. Mew thanks for posting, its good to hear this stuff.

Mew what do you do now to try to keep your hairline? Anything? I just have some thinning in the front and want to keep it so that I don't lose anything more, and I also want to get an hair transplant and the docs said with Propecia there is much less chance of shock loss.

I'd open for suggestions but I've come to the conclusion that Finesterside is way to powerful of a drug that affects the male body in more ways then meets the eye and I can't hang with it, and I've learned this in only 4 days.

Maybe I'll try splitting the 1.25 pills in threes, although this will be quite difficult because they are already so damn small.

Recently I purchased Revivogen. Besides that, I may try Minoxidil. But at this stage, I don't really care much about my hair anymore, I just want to get my sexual function back that got decimated by the drug.

There are more natural ways to try and reduce DHT, granted they may not be as powerful as Finasteride but they also likely won't have as severe side effects as a result.

Read through the Natural supplements section of this website for more ideas, or check out Immortal Hair's regimen.

Everyone reacts differently to Finasteride, the majority of men have no issue with it but for those that do, they must weigh wether they want to continue with it. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Hi StevenS,

I'm 26 and had the same thing.

I had very watery semen and less hard errections just off 0.5mg of finasteride. I stayed on it for 7 months in the hope my body would ajust but it didn't.

I've been off finasteride for about 2 weeks and everything is back to normal.

My hair stayed the same. little shed to start with but it maintained well over the 7 months. I aslo used minoxidil foam and nizoral and tricomin.

Now I've changed to Revivogen and spironolactone instead of the finasteride. doubt it will be as good but I'd rather have a good sex life.

I'm expecting my hair to take a turn for the worse now i'm off the finasteride.

Sex is much more importent then hair to me.

Good luck.

My symptoms were similar as follows-

After a few days - low libido, watery semen
After a couple of weeks - libido back to normal, semen thicker but less of it
After 1 month - slight loss of appetite
After 12 weeks - appetite now coming back

Watery semen is very common when beginning finasteride. It goes back to normal in a couple weeks. It did in my case, anyway.

UPDATE:
I got a morning wood. But on scale of 1-10 it was a 6.5, not as hard as usual and took less time to go away, where usually my morning woods are tree trunks and take a while to go down. But this is good news I'd say.

So what do you guys think, should I cut my dose in half and continue for two more solid weeks and see if things swing back to normal? So my dose would be @ .65 mg (proscar cut in 8 pieces)

Is there any more guys who started with sides and then lost them over time only to find you are as normal as you were before starting the finasteride?

Thanks very much

My sides began to return to normal at about week 8

Stick with it and allow your body to adjust - you'll need to stick to a regular dose so your body knows what its dealing with - imo

thank you! here is an update:

ALL FOGINESS HAS GONE AWAY. I am not tired, I am very alert today and had a nice jog this morning, I feel great actually.

My libido isn't bad today. Juices were flowing a bit more then past few days, I had a hot chick come by my office for an interview and found myself wanting to f*** her brains out, which is a welcoming thought.

My semen is still water. I'm not talking watery, I mean the stuff is just pure liquid.

I chipped a bit off the pill this morning with my finger nail so I'd estimate today I took about .7 milligrams (the original pill was a quartered proscar). I am going to stick with it and see what happens.

Dr. Jekyll what were your sides? Are they completely gone? Whats your dose? And has it helped your hair? Do do you just finasteride or the big 3? Thanks guys!

My sides literally lasted a couple of weeks - im now at week 10 and feel completely back to normal. Im taking 1mg finasteride daily, and yes i am using the big 3. In the first few weeks my semen was like pure water and my sex drive dropped of the scale. Id say it returned to normal after about 4 weeks - it did get a bit scary but you just have to stick with it until your body adjusts to the new hormone levels.

As for my hair (i'll be posting some new pics in a couple of weeks). After 10 weeks I gained about 5mm of new hair all along my hairline. They are not thick hairs yet but all of my temple areas are growing fine coloured hairs on skin that has been slick bald for 5 years. My whole hair generally feels thicker and healthier
