Hi everyone. I'm a total newbie here. Short story... I'm a 47 yr old female dx'd with androgenetic alopecia in 2005...although I'd been thinning in the temple area at least 3 or 4 yrs. This past summer I noticed front crown thinning, so I snapped out of my denial phase and got serious about using 5% minoxidil seriously. I've always had full, thick, long hair....so this is a bitter pill to swallow.
Then, about 1 month ago I went to consult with Dr. R Blaine Lehr, a hair transplant surgeon who studied under O'Tar Norwood MD here in Oklahoma City. My hairloss is not advanced enough for transplantation, so he wants me to consider adding one of either two drugs... 200 mg per day of Spironolactone or 2.5 mg of Proscar. He was adamant that I make the choice after researching them. He implied that the track records of both meds were about the same.
Anyway....that's my short story. Being female with this condition is just crappy....but I'm trying to remain proactive and positive. I'm just trying to prevent further loss at this point. Okiemom
