I started taking proscar March 1, 2005. I'm nearing the one year mark and thought I'd give you guys an update.
I'm 29 years old. I've slowly thinned over several years. It's primarily in the back. There are no pure bald spots back there - just thinness. People notice it only if they are standing right behind me while I'm sitting down or something. The front has receded slightly, but that actually improved - even before proscar.
My hair grows very, very thick - especially on the sides. I'd probably get a great candidate for transplants. My sides have not thinned at all - tons of hair available.
I was married; recently divorced. I guess that is the time I started thinking more about my hair. I have gone on several dates, which is a good thing.
Over the past year I've consistently taken 1.25mg of proscar every day. I use nizoral shampoo about twice a week. While my hair is still thin in the back, I do believe there has been some regrowth. I am very confident that there has no been additional loss. I did not see any sheds, but I wasn't really paying close attention.
While hair loss bothers me, mine isn't so signifcant that I'm going to take pictures and do comparisons, etc. If it gets to a point where I'm unhappy, I will certainly investigate transplants. I may investigate them very soon. I cannot afford them right now, but I could afford them in early 2007. That would coincide with my vacation scheduling at work as well.
A few things I have noticed over the past few months: cowlick in the back is back. It kind of disappeared for a while, but it comes back when I let my hair grow out. People have commented a few weeks after a haircut: "While, your hair grows back quick, huh?" Some cool things there.
I'm going to continue taking proscar. I got a 90 day supply that just ran out - lasted about a year. Three months into that 90 day supply I bought another 90 day supply (just the way the prescriptions worked out), which I plan on using until about June (one year mark for that supply - I've been told not to use past a year), at which point I will get another prescription to last a year. My insurance is good and I get it through a mail order pharmacy (blue cross - no overseas junk).
So, that's my story. No signifcant improvements but I do believe my hair has thickened. It's about what I expected. I do not think proscar is a miracle cure. But if it slowed down the process, gave me a little more thickness back, then I'm happy. I am quite sure I will get transplants in 2007.
