Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) and Hairloss

Hello Guys and Girls!

I have a very interesting problem on my hand, and so far I've been unable to find any possible cures....

About 3 years ago, (I was 15), in the midst of my puberty, I had a really bad case of acne. I had it every where on my face (cheeks, forehead, chin), back and chest. I tried many over the counter products and nothing seemed to work.

So I went offline and tried to find something "alternative". I arrived across a miracle, or atleast I thought so back than. That "Miracle" was Vitamin B-5, or in scientific terms Pantothenic Acid.

I took it for about a year and a few months, and my Acne problem has subsided considerably. Suddenly, I noticed that my hair was thinning and started to fall out. I didn't give it much thought, always ignoring it.

My acne became a bit worse during the 1-year milestone, and Pantothenic Acid wasn't really helping so I decided to drop it off.

A few months later, I noticed that when I style my hair, a lot of hair was falling out. It has reached a point where my scalp is really showing. My hair continues to fall when I pass my hand through it, and every time I wash my hair and go to sleep, the next day that I wake up, my hair has ABSOLUTELY no life. It's thin, there's no volume, it's just horrid.

I went online and tried to find a solution. Many people suggested that perhaps Vitamin B5 causes deficiency in regards to Biotin. So I tried to supplement with Biotin, and hasn't noticed any improvements. I tried Zinc, 50 B-Complex and even L-Arginine to no avail.

I am only 18 right now, and I am losing my hair rapidly. It's really concerning and my future looks really bleak. I am 100% sure that I don't have male pattern baldness, rather I believe that Vitamin B5 has caused this hair loss and I need your support and help me to reverse and regain my youth back.

Anyone had this experience supplementing with Vitamin B5? Any solutions?

Thanks a lot :)

HOnestly if you have already talked yourself into believing that you do not have male pattern baldness, then you sure as hell should not be crying.

Probably NOT!!! It's just a coincidence that your hair problems started at the same time. Sounds to me that you have diffuse thinning, but again you are 100% sure it's not, so I have to believe you. YEah right.

IF it has nothing to do with Hormone/genetic related hairloss, then a healthy lifestyle should bring your hair back.

Bob's right. The same hormone changes that caused your acne (mainly your body being flooded by testosterone) is probably causing your hair to fall out. Bob's right on second point as well...if your hairloss is not related to hormones, your hair will grow back all by itself. Take a look at your Dad, your brothers (if any), your Grandads, Bloodline Uncles, etc. Those folks have hairloss problems? If so, I would say it's hormones and welcome to the club.

Thanks for your replies.

I am not the only person that suffers from hair loss due to Vitamin B5. A few people from numerous boards and news groups reported that exact side effect.

If my hormones are out of whack, are there any supplements that can help me restore them to their natural levels?

Thank you.

Hey I hear what you're saying about B5, most of the people here have male pattern baldness and don't know about acne and B5. I quit taking it after 3 weeks because I didn't want to risk any hairloss. After reading about the side effects I started really checking my hair and since I'm a psycho I can't seem to stop worrying about it. How much hair do you lose when you shower and comb your hair?

If you want to do something about your acne, the best solution is accutane. I had horrendous acne, went to the derm for three years and nothing was done until I started accutane, cleared up very nicely. Nothing over the counter is going to work.

@Bobdue

I lost a lot of hair when I shower, comb and towel my head. It's just horrible...:(

However, if your didn't experience any hair loss/hair thinning than you should be fine. Don't take Vitamin B5 any more.

@jblig

Accutane is a very dangerous drug and while it, in some cases, eliminates acne, it causes permanent hair loss and thinning among other diseases such as liver damage and etc.
