I have wrote a post a few weeks ago describing how well Dutasteride has worked for me. Yet I see all these same old posts... :(

Get dutasteride for Christ's sakes! it actually works, obviously your old regeim isn't working....step up! The sooner the better...especially for younger dudes like me (23)

Well, if what you are doing is working then no reason to step up to the new stuff!

But I am starting to wonder if my regimen is going to produce acceptable results. I'll probably give it another 5 months or so since I only been on spironolactone and folligen for about a month. And folligen alone has straightened out so many issues for me with respect to scalp inflamation and tolerance of nizoral, itch, etc.

Dutastride is far more expensive then Finasteride. At minimal doses (.5 mg, about 1/5ths of the 2.5mg 'optimum dose'), it costs about $150 a month. By all accounts it is (generally) more effective, but it is also a far more potent drug and therefore can induce greater side effects.

If nothing better comes along when I start to lose my hair again, may very well switch to Dutasteride. But my plan is, and I recommend this to all, to use Finasteride for as long as it works for you before switching over to dutasteride, thus increasing the longevity of these treatments.

Ugh - I'm glad dutasteride works for you. I've heard that beer and olive oil will work for some.

dutasteride or B & O? I'll think about it.

You ever wonder why the trials were stopped at phase 3?

sorry

Hey guys, didn't mean to come off like a jerk, apologies. If finasteride works for you than by all means stick with it.

All Im trying to do is help allieviate some of the fears that potential users may have.

dutasteride is costing me $82.60 per month...and I only take it four to five times a week.

If the finasteride or minoxidil isn't working for you, this is definitly something to think about

Drinkrum - if guys like hair mchair and lovely are complaining that propecia "permenantly damaged" them, im amazed anyone is even considering Dutasteride, which is twice as potent hormonally as Propecia. You mentioned if your seemingly permenant side effects go away from Propecia .... you'll consider dutasteride. I don't follow this logic.

Hey HairLossTalk.com,

If finasteride's ability to curtail my hair loss subsides in the next couple of years, I will give dutasteride a run for its money. While the occurrence of side effects are worse, I am willing to take that gamble to restore my hair.

Did you think I meant if my side effects diminish?

By the way, HairLossTalk.com -- I recall you had been on finasteride for about as long as I had (3 years) and then you had the hormonal profile done. Do you remember your exact numbers for testosterone, estrone, estradiol, or total estrogens?

Cheers.

D.

I love how people assume that just because they don't get any side effects from a drug, that no one else will.

Dutasteride isn't even FDA approved for hairloss. It inhibits your DHT levels up to 90 percent, and has a much higher incidence of side effects than finasteride. If doctors are not prescribing it for hairloss, I don't think you should be doing so either.

By the way, hair mchair. I have been on finasteride for 3+ years and do experience side effects (sexual). Please read my posts before passing judgement. I don't appreciate your negativity nor sarcasm.

Cheers.

???

1) My post wasn't directed at you. It was directed at the guy who started this thread.

2) Sarcasm? I don't think I was being sarcastic at all. I was just stating my opinion. I think it's kind of dangerous to recommend something that doesn't even have FDA approval for hairloss. Using it yourself is one thing. Recommending it to others (particularly those who might not know too much about it) is quite another.

My apologies hair. I thought wrongly.

I agree with you -- dutasteride (Avodart) is some strong sh*t. A last ditch effort for me, if everything else goes awry. Keepin' my fingers (and toes) crossed.

hair,

I know we talked about this before but I don't know what the result was. Have you had a full hormonal profile done? If so, what were your levels? Particularly, estradiol, total estrogen, total testosterone, and DHT.

Im not saying that dutasteride isn't going to affect different people differently. My point is, the longer you stay on a regiem that isn't working the greater your chances are of never regrowing hair.

Granted, you need atleast a year...possibly more to accurately tell if a regiem is working or not; if you are past that point and nothing positive is happening its time to critque.

I just want everyone to have the success that I'm having , I used to be that sad, depressed guy, crying out about hair loss and its very discouraging to hear others, some of who are much younger than I am have to go through this sh*t. Its by far, without question the WORST thing that has ever happened to me.

Everyone is talking about last ditch efforts... I understand the desire to wait and see.....but dont wait too long!

You speak the truth. Hairloss does suck. It is the second worst thing that has ever happened to me.

D.

Had my serum estrogen and serum testosterone checked already. Two days ago, my urologist agreed to check my DHT, free T, SHBG, androstenedione, and DHEA levels. I'm hoping to convince my endo, whom I will be seeing next Friday, to check some other hormone levels - estradiol, estrone, progesterone, LH, FSH, thyroid, bioavailable T, Cortisol, and Prolactin.
