I was one of those who didn't respond to finasteride and have jumped on dutasteride bandwagon, have we had many success stories with dutasteride on here? I am just waiting to see if the weaker hair at the front of my hairline/temples thicken up or continue to get weaker. DOes anyone know how long I should give dutasteride? - eg. like finasteride should I give it a full year?

Hi Rapid, Only been on dutasteride for 3 weeks now, started off with dosage one capsule every other day, getting a few nasty headaches, think its the body adjusting, but if it continues long term I will have to come off. Im getting a blood test to see where my testosterone and DHT levels are to if they have decreased or not, basically to see if the drug and minoxidil is working. I am going to give it 3 months on the same dosage and do a couple of tests and then basically just see what I get from that, I do want to up the dosage as I think what I am doing now is fine anyway. Apparently finasteride only effects 80% of people that take it or in that region and my receding hairline and temples kept on thinning so I have jumped on dutasteride praying that my hairloss at least stops. But I am very curious to see my DHT/testosterone results..............///Normal testosterone levels are about 500-600 ng/dl (17-21 nmol/l).

Normal DHT levels are ca. 45 ng/dl (1,6 nmol/l). Basically, you must get under 20 ng/dl (0,6 nmol/l) to be in the "safe zone", where you don't lose hair. One month ago, my DHT levels were 17,7 ng/dl. Ten year old boys have DHT about 10 ng/dl (0,3 nmol/l). There is a guy on here called warlord who gave me this info and basically im going to find out what I am up against.......might need my artillery if my DHT is still above 20ng/dl. I think the other thing I have been told is dutasteride can cause a nasty shed in the first couple months so prepare yourself in that case. good luck bud.

wow very interesting stuff about the levels I couldnt get my Doctor to get me tested so I will go and see another soon I actually have an appointment with hair specialist on wednesday so I will see what they think about dutasteride and testosterone levels as well as dht etc. Yes I can vouch for the nasty shed mate I lost bucketloads of hair when it is wet it is completely see through now and I could rub my hands through my hair at any time of the day and get a ****eload of hairs which was a major concern I believe my shedding appears to have slowed down and it is very hard to remain positive about this sort of thing my hairline is also receding slightly but I am diffuse all over, keep us posted on your progress mate dutasteride is an interesting topic! good luck

Yeah I haven't been able to get my Doctor to test me either first time around, but am seeing another one now and am going to try and force it through and explain the situation. I think the blood test is a very good idea, as 95% of hairloss is DHT related so you need to know what your levels are and if what you are doing is working. Having said that, if I get rejected for a blood test for a second time around I will have to find out where to go and get one without paying a stupid price for it. I don't think I have had a shed just yet, I seem to be ok, but am starting to keep a very up to date picture album of my hairline and temples and following everything very closely every 2 weeks. I will keep my updates on the other topic I have on general discussion and use this one to discuss dutasteride if anyone else decides to pop in and have there say.

I was on finasteride for a little over a year and it probably slowed the progression. I then tried dutasteride for a year and if it was more effective it was very marginal. About a couple of months ago I just went back to finasteride. The dutasteride was underwhelming, like the finasteride.

Like you fml, I was let down by finasteride as well and didn't feel it was doing anything more me, as I said I think you should get your DHT levels tested as you need to know weather it is having any effect in reducing DHT. Good luck with going back on finasteride. I was on 2.5 a day with finasteride and still didn't get any results. You could combined finasteride and dutasteride long term and see how that goes.

If anyone is reading this, what are the possibilities of dutasteride working compared to those who were not very successful with finasteride?

I started Cipla's Duprost 0.5 mg/day since 1st January 2013 after several years on finasteride. After shedding around March/April I'm back to "normal". I'm always concerned because AVODART presents in Soft Gelatin Capsules and the Duprost pill it's just powder...
