Traish AM, Hassani J, Guay AT, Zitzmann M, and Hansen M. Adverse side effects of 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors therapy: Persistent diminished libido and erectile dysfunction and depression in a subset of patients. J Sex Med 2011;8:872 - 844.

Propecia Side-Effects Paper

Introduction. 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors (5 alpha-RIs), finasteride and dutasteride, have been approved for treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms, due to benign prostatic hyperplasia, with marked clinical efficacy. Finasteride is also approved for treatment of hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Although the adverse side effects of these agents are thought to be minimal, the magnitude of adverse effects on sexual function, gynecomastia, depression, and quality of life remains ill-defined.

Aim. The goal of this review is to discuss 5 alpha-RIs therapy, the potential persistent side effects, and the possible mechanisms responsible for these undesirable effects.

Methods. We examined data reported in various clinical studies from the available literature concerning the side effects of finasteride and dutasteride.

Main Outcome Measures. Data reported in the literature were reviewed and discussed.

Results. Prolonged adverse effects on sexual function such as erectile dysfunction and diminished libido are reported by a subset of men, raising the possibility of a causal relationship.

Conclusions. We suggest discussion with patients on the potential sexual side effects of 5 alpha-RIs before commencing therapy. Alternative therapies may be considered in the discussion, especially when treating androgenetic alopecia.

Jacob, Dr Proctor was grandfathered in before that policy. And secondly, he is very professional when he comes on here and teaches us alot. He only answers questions about his products if someone asks. I guarantee you not one single poster in this forum EXCEPT YOU would object to him answering questions about his products or hair loss subjects in general on any threads. Have some respect for the doctor. I have never seen one post where he suggests someone use his products. Show me one.

Doctorhouse..if that's the explanation, it wasn't given to me either via PM or here. And that is to/from those that actually work here. It wouldn't make sense anyway. It sure is fair for everybody else, isn't it? I wonder how the advertisers here(and in at least one other forum) would feel if they knew some Doctor and his pal were drumming up business in these forums while they're having to pay to advertise, and I guess aren't allowed in the forums. Kind of pathetic Dr. P can't pay to advertise like everyone else, don't you think? Watch..he may actually do so now..which wouldn't change anything that's happened the past 10 years or however long it's been since he's actually paid to advertise, which some say he has.

I disagree on how professional he is. A guy who comes in after months of absence, in a DR LEE GETTING CANNED THREAD(in at least TWO forums), to drum up more business, is pathetic. He does NOT answer all questions. I kept a copy of the thread that got deleted(wow..wonder why..since "threads don't get deleted, they just get moved..)", where not only did he not answer my simple questions, but he then brings up some product I use and tries to turn it around on me. I'm not selling anything. I'm not making the claims. I'm not going around saying there are "mysterious ingredients" in my product but then won't disclose them. Etc etc.

Why should I look for a post where Dr. P has suggested to use his products? He has Bryan doing that for him. Even w/out that..it's just common sense that when he's mentioning his product he's advertising it. Or even when just answering questions about it. People can ask him via email. Again, "The HairlossTalk Discussion Forum is a consumers-only forum. This means anyone who is associated with any product or service tied to the hair loss industry is not permitted to register or participate here"

And btw..let's stop pretending that I'm the only one pointing stuff like this out. I just came across a very long thread started up by someone else..with plenty of others agreeing with him. I've noticed that over the years..this stupid Prox thing gets brought up again, and/or Dr. P shows up again..and then disappears when ppl raise questions about him and his products.

It's also easy to look high and mighty by launching pointless attacks that it isn't wise for anyone to answer.

Oh there's nothing pointless about them. Everything I said was true. Again..the indefensible cannot be defended, and that's the only thing that makes one wise..to not try to defend them.

Dr. P posted the same thing in another forum btw..here's a response:

Maybe there's something I'm missing here but it seems all too blatant that this Doctor pushes the finasteride side effects issue because he has and alternative product to sell you. That's the first impression I got and this certainly wouldn't be the first forum in which a businessman has attacked products so that he can offer an alternative...

Nah... :shakehead:
