I am curious to know if you are required to take minoxidil. or propecia even after your hair transplant? Are hair transplant more or les permanent or are they subject to thinning as you age?

The transplanted hair is fairly DHT resistant but you still need the meds to preserve the rest of your hair. And yes it is possible to suffer a small degree of loss from the transplanted hair because even hair from the donor region can thin out over time.

Yes indeed, it is the natural hair that is receptive to DHT that you still need the meds for.

Otherwise we would lose the natural hair around the transplants and have little islands of terminal hair with nothing around it.

There has been rare cases as well where the transplanted hairs have died for whatever reason but this is extremely rare.

bigmac,

You are correct and there are several reasons why someone would lose their transplanted hair. For the larger part it is due to the doctor taking the donor too high out of the safe zone. In other words hair from that location is in fact receptive to DHT. Then there are various medical conditions and /or medications that the patient experiences in the years to follow which can also cause the terminal hair to fall out.

in all likelihood the transplanted hair will grow forever without. If for some reason your grafts "die" I think finasteride or minoxidil wouldn't have saved them anyways, there something else going on if grafts are dying. But finasteride or minoxidil may save non hair transplant hairs, may not.

Not very reassuring news when the cure becomes the cause. :shakehead:
