I'm 25 and have been on propecia 1mg and minoxidil 5% for five years. I've been able to maintain almost a full head of hair. At the beginning of the year, I noticed that my temple had receded a little and were thinning a bit farther back, so I started using minoxidil 5% twice a day again, which I had stopped doing for around two years. It helped. I also started on nizoral 2% as a preventative measure because of what I've read on this site, but it irritated the heck out of my scalp and I shed a of couple hairs along the hairline.
I bought some of Dr. Lee's 5% cream and use that twice a day along my hairline and temples. I also invested in folligen and use that twice a day. I started using t-gel shampoo and conditioner once a day last week, and all I've gotta say is, why didn't I start using this damn shampoo a long time ago. I mean they used it in the propecia studies, not nizoral. The t-gel has relieved me of scalp problems. By the way, the nizoral 1% was too harsh for my scalp, too.
Anyway, if I feel that the propecia's effects may be waning a bit, what else can I do to maintain my hair. I don't want to risk the shed with Dr lee's 15% minoxidil, and avodart scares me a bit. I have, however, read someone's post here that stated that they felt propecia's effects waning after two years, so they bumped up the dose to 2mg a day, and experienced a halt in shedding. Does anyone have any comment on any of the above statements?

I know that there wasnt much of a difference in the percentage of DHT suprresion in 5mg in prostate patients compared to the 1.25mg for propecia. I do not think you will be able to suppress more than the 30-40% that 1.25mg of Propecia does. Duasteride does 90% and if you did good on propecia you should do good on duasteride which blocks type 1 and type 2 dht.

That sounds kinda scary, although I know some people are doing it. I don't know what the reasoning is behind it.

I can tell you I had sexual side effects on dutasteride and reduced dosage to 0.5 mg every other day. A lot of people seem to be doing that as well. Funny thing is, I only reduced dosage a few days ago and the sides are completely gone.

Yeddie, how are you doing since switching from propecia to dutasteride. Less fallout? Any regrowth? Why the switch?

finasteride served me well for a few years and then it just seemed to stop working. As for dutasteride, it's too early to tell, I'm only about 5 weeks in. I wasn't shedding before and now I am shedding pretty bad. I am hoping this means I will respond well to dutasteride.

Keep me updated Yedster. I am contemplating the switch also as it's now my 4th year on finasteride. and I think the benefits are starting to wane.
