Propecia 1mg report after 3 years

Hi all,

I've now been using Propecia/Proscar 1mg for 3 years and do not have much to report: I'm not losing hair, no regrowth noticed, side-effects almost zero (some problems during beginning) but most important thing is that I do not think the whole balding business anymore at all! I take my pill in the morning and that's it. Just like brushing my teeth, doesn't require very much thinking. Even coming to write this report to this forum was almost too much of effort.

(Above are the same words I used 24 months ago in my previous report. Nothing has changed since, my hair looks good, no thinning and even I have some times difficulties to see the spot with a mirror).

Also, I still think what I thought 2 years ago:

My advice is still: try Propecia, you don't know if you don't try. Be prepared that your body may take a month or so to adapt to finasteride. If after three months or so you still have problems, seriously consider quitting.

And use camera! I'm a bit disappointed that I don't have a photos from my head 12 months ago.

This will be probably my last report while using finasteride. Maybe years later if and when I quit finasteride I'll come back but who knows. I'm now 30 years old and balding doesn't get me scared at all nowadays like it used to do 4 or 5 years ago.

I'm sure lots of newbies and probably vets would like to know your experience with 3 years on finasteride, far to many people disappear after getting results or otherwise.

What you said is very true: people who have no problems just forget this forum and never come back, that's why here are so many problem reports and so few success stories. Heck, even I forgot to post my 2 years report!

Congrats on your maintainence. We need more people like you in this forum to share the experience. I was scared to start finasteride after reading some many -ve stories but stories like yours made me go for it...

Could you think back about shedding? I'm into my 12th week, my side effects and it's gradual disappearance match yours exactly by the weeks and symptoms, you're like a future me talking back

Can you roughly recall which weeks/months you woke up with a pillow shed? my gague of a non shed day is ~5 hairs on the pillow and probably ~10 hairs when I frisk through my morning hair in the bathroom.

I've just had a 3rd month shed in the evening shower today, 45 hairs vs the usual 25.

now thinking back, I think I actually had a short shred period at some point, maybe two weeks between one month. But as I said, I don't waste my time at all thinking about balding, so I didn't panic at that time. I didn't notice anything on my pillow, more like while using my comb I noticed "more than usual" amount of hair, just enough that I noticed. I remember that I thought that "this now might be shredding caused by finasteride" but since it was over so quickly and so minor, I more or less ignored it and forgot it now until you mentioned it. But I presume based on other testimonials on these forums that even if you get more shredding, it will pass and you'll be ok in the end.

About maintaining my hairline for 3 years: I'd guess that the most important thing is what also my Doctor said that the sooner you start the better results you get. Perhaps things would have been different for me if I would have waited for a completely bald area to appear but fortunately when I noticed thinning on top I started my research (back then I knew nothing about finasteride or min or others) and concluded that finasteride would be worth trying.

Nowadays at least here in Finland Rogaine is advertised pretty lot (tv campaings maybe twice a year on two out of four national tv channels) and radio advertisements almost every month, also sometimes ads on magazines and newspapers. The good thing is that people now realize that there *are* drugs to stop balding but I'm not quite sure whether Rogaine is the best choice or not. I'm not planning to try out as finasteride is working so good for me.

problems meaning sides? do you mean if you get sides for 3 months, you should still stick with it? and that they'll go away eventually. if they don't go away after 3 month then stop it?

Summary: few weaks of unpleasent feelings and some noticeable changes between my legs but after that everything came back to normal.

Yes, when I was writing about problems I meant side effects. I'm pretty sure that for most people side effects will go away eventually but I wouldn't risk my health too much and that's why I would have quit if I had had side effects still after around 3 months. That was also recommendation from my Doctor:"See how it goes for 3 months, then let's have a status check."

If you have side effects for few weeks in the beginning, that's not yet a reason to quit or panic but being more observant what is happening in your body. My reasoning is that if Propecia 1 mg could irreversible destroy your health in just a few weeks, I'm sure FDA and other such instances would never have granted permission to sell it in the first place. But continuing a year or so with side effects would be very, very risky.

Ive been on finasteride for just about 6 years now and i think i have maintained well.
