Propecia affecting the liver

My wife works with some kid who was taking Propecia but said he had to stop because his doctor told him it was destroying his liver. Is this possible? What kind of effect does finasteride have on the liver?

The reason I took it with a grain of salt is that I've met this guy who told her this and he lies about a lot of sh*t. He often makes up stuff just to have a story to tell.

Anyone know if this is true, though??

Do an internet search.

Did some research. There seemed to be mixed messages. Some suggested it does affect the liver, and others said it doesn't at all. I was wondering if anyone knew anything from experience .

I have been wanting to get on propecia for six months now, but I'm currently taking accutane for my acne and my derm told me that I had to wait until I finish accutane before I can take propecia because they both effect the liver.

But then again another dr told me that I could safely do both, so I'm pretty much lost. Now I just go around irritated not really knowing what I should do.

I read that people with pre-existing liver conditions like liver disease shouldn't take finasteride. Perhaps this was the case with him and finasteride made it worse.

I wonder if hair loss has anything to do with poor liver or kidney function? Or maybe the pancreas. :jackit:

To get fda approval they submitted testing where they run all the current medical testing. Bone density, toxicity tests, and lots of others ones. The liver is one of them. The drug is processed and broken down in the liver by 1 or 2 specific enzymes. In people with normal functioning livers the drug shouldnt damage your liver at all. Merk would be required to list liver damager if they found it to cause that as a side effect. All testing says no that shouldnt happen, but again our testing isnt exactly infallible and its also safe to say theres a few things that happen in the body that science doesnt quite understand as of today so there is always a chance.
I think if you took 1 medication that uses those specific enzymes listed on merks website or the fda panel discussion for its approval, then you should not take 2 medications that both require those same enzymes. Again its not really a cut and dry thing as most things in the human body are to complex for science today to understand completely.

Hairloss has nothing to do with liver, kidneys or pancreas as of current medical knowledge. Its genes, its androgens, and its the process of aging.
