Propecia and Itchy Skin

Hey,

I've been on propecia for about 5 - 6 months right now, but after two months I had unbearable itching. First i thought it was scabies because there were hive like symptoms and i had very similar side effects. I asked my doctor for an anti-histamine to reduce to side effects ( polaramine ) while i did my tests to make sure it was scabies. The results came back negative, and at this time i did not even think that it was propecia that could be the cause of it.

Since then i've been using the anti-histamine very regularly as it in effect makes the symptoms go away. However, now the fact that i use it regularly i fear that it is slowly causing eczema on my skin. ( I see the elasticity of the skin slowly )

Now, i really do not want to stop propecia, considering i'm 18 and have been having hair loss symptoms from about 17 this is the primary reason why I keep taking the anti-histamine even though i probably shouldn't. I recently moved to France and the symptoms started in winter, I'm not at all used to the cold so i'm kinda hoping on the fact that it could be in fact because of the cold. Maybe false hope, but hope anyway.

I haven't read an often lot of people who have the same symptoms? Is it that rare?
And if i were to be allergic to it, does that mean that propecia will not work anyway and thus taking the anti-histamine is no use ?

It really sucks if that's the case, because i'm not keen on giving up something that offers so much hope in my case.

I don't experience any other side effects, and in effect, an increased libido.

Please get back to me soon, would like this to get resolved!

As an alternative is it possible to take avodart? I know that itchy skin is listed as one of the side effects. But what i want to know is whether by taking an anti-histamine in conjunction is possible or just a waste of time ?

I think it must be pretty rare but I had the same thing happen. I
asked around here when it started and I don't recall anyone responding
to my posts.

I used a anti-itch cream for a while and it helped. Mine went away after
a few weeks I guess as my body got used to the finasteride. Since then I've read a
couple of other posts like yours. The only thing that I would suggest if it
keeps up is to reduce your dosage for a while.

But does it mean that i'm allergic to propecia thus nulling any positive effects that i could get from it? or is it just an undesirable side effect ?

I think it's possible that its an allergic reaction and as you know sometimes
allergies go away. I think in my case it did. Since i had similar symptoms and
have had good results I would keep at it to see it it does stop. The itching was
really uncomfortable but only lasted a couple of months.

Also happened to me, stopped after two-three weeks. I found lotion to relieve the itch.

Hi, I'm new here and this happened to me as well. I developed a bit of a rash and later, what my doctor believes to be eczema, on my neck (since September). I took Propecia for a few weeks and stopped because the itch was unbareable, and I figured it wasn't going to benefit me to continue since I was reacting this was. Is there any alternative, if not, what itch cream/medicine does anyone recommend?? Please reply.. and thanks!
